MAINTENANCE HELPER I - Public Services - Sewer Collection

JOB SUMMARY

Under supervision, perform functions related to installation and repair of the water distribution and wastewater collection system. Perform other related work as required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Install and repair parts of the water distribution and wastewater collection system. Work with various types of equipment and vehicles: backhoe, jet trucks, pumps, and generators; dump trucks, jet trucks, and service trucks; tapping machines, valve wrenches, pumps, generators, hand wrenches, hand and power saws, jackhammers, hammers of various sizes, grinder, shovels, drain spades, drills and, drill press. Follow written and oral instructions. Lift and/or carry 100 pounds of equipment and materials. Push, pull and/or drag 150 pounds of equipment. Climb, crawl, drive, kneel, sit, squat, stand, twist, walk, and/or stoop to perform installation and repair tasks. Sort various materials. Work in various extreme conditions: cold, heat, temperature swings, noise, outdoors and indoors. Work in trenches and confined spaces, using appropriate safety precautions and equipment. Work safely in street and alley traffic zones. Work around hazards: mechanical, electrical, explosive, fumes, odors, dust, chemical and toxic waste. Wear and properly use safety equipment. Read instructions, and write (by-hand). Hear clearly (to work safely in traffic areas). Function as crew chief when designated to do so. Set up barricades when required, to protect employee(s) and the public. Serve on standby crew for after hours emergency work as required. Perform routine maintenance to vehicles, tools, and equipment. Read simple maps and drawings accurately. Communicate courteously and effectively with other employees, officials, and the public.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

Pick up trash, keep storage areas clean and orderly.

REQUIRED EDUCATION: DEGREES, CERTIFICATES, AND/OR LICENSES:

High school diploma or GED required. Texas Commercial Drivers License, Class A, required. Class II Wastewater and/or Water Distribution Class C license, or equal (e.g., surface water and/or wastewater treatment licenses), preferred.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS:

One year of experience required as a Maintenance Helper II in Water/Sewer, Construction & Rehabilitation, or Street division. General maintenance experience preferred. Must have knowledge to work safely with all types of equipment and vehicles used in water distribution and wastewater collection system maintenance. Experience required working with various types of equipment, including but not limited to, pumps, generators, backhoes, dump trucks, jet trucks, tapping machines, valve wrenches, jackhammers, grinders, skill saws, chain saws, bolt cutters, etc.

High School Diploma or GED required. Texas Drivers License, Class C, required. Must obtain applicable Commercial Learner's Permit within 1 month of hire. Must obtain Texas Class A Commercial Drivers License, within 6 months of hire. Must have experience in working with various types of equipment including pumps, generators, backhoes, dump trucks, etc. Work Days and Hours: M-F 7:00-3:30
