Job Title: Light Equipment Operator- Cemetery

Department: Parks and Leisure

Reports To: Cemetery Supervisor

Hourly: $17.46

Job Summary

This is a Full-Time position working under the direction of the Cemetery Supervisor. Exercises no supervisory role.

Typical Duties: Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • To perform a wide variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of City equipment and facilities as assigned.

  • Stock vehicle with supplies and materials necessary to perform job assignments; operate, clean, service, maintain, and perform minor repair on assigned tools, machinery, equipment, and vehicles; sharpen tools with cutting edges.

  • Operate a variety of equipment including pickups, tractors, lawn mowers, week eaters and other related maintenance equipment.

  • Secure and petition off work area as necessary with traffic signs, cones and barricades; flag and direct traffic around work area as necessary.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Maintenance Tech: This is the entry/journey level class. This class performs routine tasks and duties assigned. Employees in this class typically work under immediate supervision. Employees may have only limited or no direct related work experience.

Employees at this level receive instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.

Other Important Responsibilities and Duties

  • Prepare various paperwork including completed work orders, job logs, and draft reports.

  • Provide assistance to other City departments as needed.

  • Will work on-call duty and will respond to emergency call back as required by supervisor.

  • Clean area after repair work is completed.

  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge of

  • Materials and supplies used in the maintenance, repair, and servicing of machinery, equipment, and facilities of department.

  • Proper lifting techniques for minimizing physical injury.

  • Hazards associated with the work and proper safety precautions.

  • Proper procedures for mixing, pouring, and finishing concrete.

  • Basic carpentry, masonry, and plumbing principles and practices.

  • Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, policies, and regulations.

  • Formal and informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance is a must.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be a United States Citizen or eligible to work in the United States.

  • Must have a valid Texas driver's license and have and maintain a satisfactory driving record.

  • Ability to communicate (read, write and speak) effectively in the English language.

  • High School diploma or GED required.

Ability to

  • Learn to operate, service, maintain, and perform minor repairs on assigned machinery, equipment, vehicles and various hand tools.

  • Learn modern constructing techniques and practices.

  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

  • Recognize and apply Federal, State, and local policies, procedures, laws, and regulations.

  • Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:

  • Making observations

  • Communicating with others.

  • Reading and writing.

  • Operating assigned equipment.

  • Operating a motor vehicle.

  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:

  • Walking, standing, or sitting, for extended periods of time.

  • Lifting, carrying, dragging, holding, cleaning, and pushing a variety of supplies and equipment over 100 pounds.

  • Climbing, kneeling, squatting, and stooping in the performance of routine job tasks.

  • Effectively deal with personal danger, which may include exposure to:

  • Extremes in hot and cold temperatures associated with working outdoors

  • Levels of extreme and constant noise

  • Mechanical hazards

  • Chemical and dust/mite hazards

Work Environment

Majority of work is performed outside in all types of weather including extreme heat and cold weather conditions.
