Description

ACES is currently seeking a full time Social Worker at The Center for Autism Spectrum and Developmental Disorders in the SAILS program in Northford, CT.

10-month position within the Autism Programs - 196 day school year
Mandatory Summer School in July

A social worker at ACES is an integral part of a student-centered interdisciplinary team-focused on preparing the student for young adult life. The social worker instructs and counsels students directly through individual and group work and develops important connections with the student's family and community. By identifying and building on the student's strengths and developing and working with his or her support system, the ACES social worker helps the student navigate challenges, achieve goals, and experience positive growth in the educational setting. The social work acts as liaison between the school and community resources.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participates in PPTs, conferences, meetings and other activities, as assigned.
  • Counsels' individual and/or groups of students, as assigned.
  • Provides support for parents in understanding their child's educational program, the educational process and their child's needs.
  • Participates in activities for self-growth, evaluation, and on-going professional improvement.
  • Supports program and agency goals and acts as an advocate for students, including the maintenance of confidentiality.
  • Submits required reports of evaluations in a timely manner.
  • Enhances awareness of relevant professional developments Increases training, where appropriate, in new methodologies and techniques
  • Trains and/or arranges for in-services for parents and/or staff in areas of special expertise, as needed.
  • Model's appropriate social skills and behaviors
  • Participates in peer supervision, when applicable
  • Develops IEP goals, statements and short-term objectives to be provided in a student's education program.
  • Maintains student records in accordance with applicable laws and ACES policy.
  • Provides support and collaboration to staff.

Job Qualifications

Knowledge of:
  • Counseling modalities and methodologies
  • National, state and local education policies, practices and procedures and applicable laws ACES policies and procedures
  • Appropriate developmental assessment tools and methods for the school environment

Skills in:
  • Developing a clinically informed dynamic formulation of a student within his or her educational setting
  • Accessing assistance/resources from, and consulting with, the school community, families and community agencies
  • Crisis intervention inclusive of de-escalation strategies
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Communication to create positive working and learning environment.
  • Collaborating with consultants providing services to assigned students.

Ability to:
  • Formulate psycho-social diagnosis regarding the possible etiology of students' educational problems.
  • Develop clear and specific written plans of action for remediation.
  • Evaluate student's interpersonal relationships in the context of both the family and the broader social environments.
  • Develop comprehensive evaluations utilizing appropriate assessment tools and strategies.
  • Identify a student's presenting problems and establish priorities based on those that most significantly impact his/her education.
  • Foster a sense of self-worth and independence.
  • Foster students' sense of responsibility for self and others
  • Follow up on outside placements of students.


Qualifications
