Power Trading Analyst (or Senior Analyst)

An international energy company in Houston seeks a Power Trading Analyst to support its Power and Natural Gas businesses. The Power Trading Analyst will actively participate in market analysis, hedging, fuel procurement, dispatch/bidding, asset operations, and M&A activities for its power generation assets, primarily in the PJM, ISO-NE, NYISO, MISO, and ERCOT markets.


The Power Trading Analyst is part of a small, collaborative team responsible for asset trading, generation optimization, and maximizing profitability margins. Key responsibilities include a combination of analytics to support commercial decisions:

  • Following the daily physical and financial power markets. Research the ancillary, energy, and capacity markets, emissions/REC markets, and regulatory developments. Identify key market drivers and data points.
  • Performing analysis to determine short and long-term trading opportunities in the commodity markets (power, RECs, natural gas, etc.).
  • Understanding power market nuances that impact individual generation assets and the overall general portfolio.
  • Formulating short and long-term market views and forecast power prices to optimize asset trading and hedging decisions.
  • Working with plant operations, third-party energy managers, and fuel suppliers (intraday gas procurement) for optimal asset trading and optimization.
  • Supporting the daily Day-Ahead bidding strategy and trade execution of power generation for natural gas-fired facilities in PJM, ISO-NE, and NYISO based on market conditions and the company s positions.
  • Daily monitoring and reporting on the power plant activity.
  • Assisting with asset valuation support for M&A opportunities.
  • Developing processes/systems to support front-office operations required to optimize generation assets. Working across internal teams (front, middle, and back-office) to capture transactions in third-party Risk Management (ETRM), Logistics, Finance, and Accounting Systems.
  • Reporting on critical commercial and operational metrics on generation portfolio.
  • Reviewing and managing project contract obligations.
  • Undertake ad hoc tasks, including preparing commercial operations presentations.


Educational and Professional Requirements:

  • Bachelor s degree in business, economics, finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3+ years of commercial analytical experience working with conventional or renewable power generation assets. Prior professional experience in trading analytics, structuring, quantitative analysis, quantitative risk, fundamental analysis, and/or market risk will be considered.
  • Strong analytic and modeling skills.
  • Understanding and knowledge of locational marginal pricing (LMP-based) in the wholesale power market (ideally experience with PJM, ISO-NE, NYISO, MISO, and/or ERCOT).
  • Exposure to power trading, power generation, and/or hedge strategy development for natural gas-fired generation assets (required). Exposure to renewable energy generation including wind, solar, and battery storage (a plus).
  • Knowledge and experience with dispatch models (a plus).
  • Knowledge of trade capture systems.
  • Proficient knowledge of commodity risk management analysis.
  • The position requires an entrepreneurial mindset and the ability to help build processes/systems.
  • Advanced skills in data analysis, advanced Excel, VBA, SQL, and PowerPoint. Experience with Python, R, MATLAB, C/C#/C++, JAVA is a plus.
