Job Description / Essential Elements:

JOB DESCRIPTON: SUBSTITUTE TEACHER

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of an administrator, in the absence of the classroom teacher, provide instruction, encourage student progress and manage the learning environment. Demonstrate professional practices in teaching using the course of study and lesson plan provided by the regular classroom teacher.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Implements lessons plans, while ensuring the integrity of the academic time and in a matter which motivates students to learn and participate.
Collects homework and student assignments as directed for the regular classroom teacher.
Maintains and respects confidentiality of student and school personnel information
Maintains a discipline and classroom control that fosters a safe and positive environment for all students and staff.
Reports all student injuries, accidents and illnesses to the proper school administrators immediately or as soon as possible.
Follows directives from school administrators.
Reports to the Main Office upon arrival at school, meets with the school administrative assistant, checks mailbox of absent teacher for lesson plans and materials; requests clarification of school rules and district policies, if necessary.
Returns the room keys to the school administrative assistant and instructional materials and equipment to the proper place.
Determines if his/her services will be required for substation through substitute system.

OTHER DUTIES:
Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:
Safe practices in classroom activities.
Basic instructional methods and techniques.
Classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct.
Operation of standard office and classroom equipment including a computer and assigned software.
Oral and written communication skills.
Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
Record-keeping and filing techniques.

ABILITY TO:
Implement a lesson plan to high school students.
Assist in the preparation of instructional materials and implementation of instructional activities.
Perform a variety of clerical duties including typing, filing and duplicating materials.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Monitor, observe and report student behavior and progress according to approved policies and procedures.
Understand and relate to high school students.
Observe health and safety regulations.
Maintain records and files.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Operate standard office and classroom equipment including a computer and assigned software.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's Degree in any subject.
Possession of CBEST
Prior experience working with secondary school (Grade 7-12) students desired.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Holds or has the ability to obtain a California Single Subject or Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential or a 30-Day Emergency Substitute Permit.

Lifting and moving offices supplies and boxes.
Lifting and carrying students as assigned by the position.

**The Education Code requires that a criminal background check be conducted on all persons prior to employment by a school district to ascertain whether the applicant has been arrested or convicted of any crime. Conviction of certain crimes designated as a "violent felony" or a "serious felony" may disqualify a person from employment.
