BUS TRANSPORTATION AIDE

BASIC FUNCTION

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist in providing safe transportation for physically and mentally handicapped students; monitor, assist and care for students.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Assist in providing safe transportation for physically and mentally handicapped students; assist with the loading and unloading of students; utilize a wheelchair lift as necessary.

Monitor student behavior; provide assistance to meet the special needs of students; maintain order and discipline among students in accordance with District policies and procedures; assure student understanding of proper bus behavior and emergency procedures.

Assist students in wheelchairs by loading and securing chairs before departure and assuring students are safely fastened into their seats; secure seat belts, harnesses, tie downs and various adaptive and assistive devices; restrain physically active or aggressive students as needed.

Provide recreational and educational activities for students; read books to students as appropriate; develop student behavior plans as required.

Determine appropriate action in potential or real medical emergency situations according to established guidelines; administer first aid to passengers as needed.

Communicate with teachers, staff and parents concerning student needs, issues and concerns.

Clean up after students as needed.

Maintain routine records related to student behavior and assigned activities.

OTHER DUTIES

Perform related duties as assigned.

Child guidance and motivational principles and practices related to children with special education needs.

Problems and concerns of students with special needs.

Methods and techniques for meeting the special needs of students and responding to behavior issues.

Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

Health, safety, and child abuse regulations.

Oral and written communication skills.

First aid and CPR procedures.

Basic record-keeping techniques.

ABILITY TO

Assist in providing safe transportation for physically and mentally handicapped students.

Demonstrate an understanding, patient and receptive attitude toward special education students.

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with adults and children.

Assist with the loading and unloading of students.

Monitor, observe and control student behavior according to approved policies and procedures.

Understand and relate to children with special needs.

Learn to operate harnesses, tie downs and various adaptive and assistive devices.

Understand and follow oral and written directions.

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Observe health and safety regulations.

Maintain routine records related to work performed.

Administer first aid and CPR.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and demonstrated experience working with children with special needs.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

A valid American Red Cross (or equivalent) CPR Certificate and Standard American Red Cross First Aid Certificate (or equivalent) required at time of application.

ENVIRONMENT

School bus environment.

Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate safety devices.

Sitting for extended periods of time in restricted space.

Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to assist students.

Lifting children as assigned by the position.

HAZARDS

Riding in a vehicle during adverse weather conditions.
