POSITION SUMMARY: This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Before and After School Care Instructor I creates meaningful and lasting relationships with participants. Is a role model to children, an ally to parents and a partner with teachers through planned and engaging activities. Play, be silly and laugh but most importantly, guide the youth of the programs into becoming great people!

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Plans and implements engaging program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with YMCA values.
  2. Nurtures children through purposeful programming dedicated to providing opportunities for achievement and belonging, including homework assistance.
  3. Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards.
  4. Ensure all children are signed in and out with time of drop off and pick up.
  5. Check identification of all persons picking up children and are on the pick-up list.
  6. Uphold and teach the four core values of Honesty, Caring, Respect and Responsibility.
  7. Maintains positive relationships and effective communication with parents.
  8. Makes ongoing, systematic observations and evaluations of each child.
  9. Maintains required program records including attendance and disciplinary actions.
  10. Maintains required program records.
  11. Attends and participates in program activities, staff meetings, and staff training.
  12. Play a role in securing gifts for the annual campaign.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Minimum age 16, 18 for licensed schools.
  2. Some childcare experience preferred.
  3. Must have 12 continuing education units annually.
  4. Required training completed within designated time of start: Duty to Report, Keeping your YMCA Safe, Meet Sam, Social Media Safety, and 13 Baseline Trainings.
  5. Certifications required within 30 days of hire: CPR/AED & First Aid and New Employee Orientation.
  6. Ability to relate and communicate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  7. Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Visual, auditory, and verbal ability to communicate effectively.
  • Must have high level of alertness, concentration, and initiative.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and stand, walk, or sit for extended periods of time; occasionally stoop/bend.
  • Maintain a neat and professional appearance at all times.
  • Potential extreme heat during peak summer months.
