POSITION SUMMARY/CLASS DESCRIPTION

Love working with children? Howard County Recreation & Parks is seeking active, engaging and responsible staff for preschool summer camps.

Responsibilities will include supervising children and planning curriculum as well as the daily operations and administrative responsibilities of the camps.

Camps are half day and run from Monday - Thursday.

Applicants must be at least 20 years of age.

Previous experience working with preschool children is preferred.

Salary: Minimum Wage - $19.00/hour depending on experience.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

CAMP DIRECTOR:

  1. Accept responsibility for the physical safety and emotional well being of the children. Take responsibility for the program & program staff.
  2. Check ID's of person picking child up from camp.
  3. Review other necessary camp paperwork
  4. Ensure children are properly supervised at all times.
  5. Communicate clearly and courteously with school personnel, center staff, specialized camp staff, parents, junior counselors and children.
  6. Oversee & direct the planning of a well-rounded program of recreational activities including: music, games, drama, arts and crafts, social activities and special events. (Activities may vary depending upon the specific requirements of each camp). Implement the program as posted on the weekly calendar.
  7. Report accidents, property damage, or major disciplinary problems to the director.
  8. Oversee & direct the setting up and taking down of equipment and cleaning up area daily. Maintain cleanliness of the center, including picking up trash, sweeping floor daily, etc.
  9. Pick up snacks and supplies from the Department's warehouse.
  10. Wear Howard County name tag always. Dress appropriately for taking an active role with children.
  11. Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the Recreation Supervisor / Coordinator.
  12. Responsible for the day-to-day supervision of the inclusion companion(s) and/or interpreter, completion of evaluation reports, and verification of companion time cards.
  13. All other duties as assigned.
Administrative Requirements:
  1. Oversee and direct the securing of the Camp Participant Information Form for each child.
  2. Oversee and direct the preparing weekly calendar and post on site.
  3. Ensure that parents sign children in and out each day. Maintain accurate attendance sheet at all times.
  4. Oversee and direct the preparation of camp newsletter or correspondence.
  5. Complete accident/incident reports accurately and turn into director.
  6. Document and notify supervisor / coordinator with any concerns regarding staff or children.
ASSISTANT CAMP DIRECTOR:
  1. Accept responsibility for the physical safety and emotional well being of the children. Take responsibility for the program in the Director's absence.
  2. Insure children are properly supervised and accurate attendance is maintained at all times.
  3. Communicate clearly and courteously with parents, children, program staff and school or park personnel.
  4. Assists in planning a well-rounded program of age-appropriate activities including: music, games, arts and crafts, circle time, active play, social activities and special events.
  5. Report accidents, property damage, or major disciplinary problems to the Director.
  6. Assist in setting up and taking down equipment and cleaning up area daily. Maintain cleanliness of the program space, including picking up trash, sweeping floor daily, etc.

MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

CAMP DIRECTOR:
  1. Must be 20 years old.
  2. Ability to effectively meet the social, emotional and physical needs of the children in the program.
  3. Ability to communicate effectively with parents, peers and participants.
  4. Knowledge of program curriculum.
  5. Infant and Child CPR certification required by the beginning of the program.
  6. Professional experience working with preschool children.
ASSISTANT CAMP DIRECTOR:
  1. Must be 20 years old and able to effectively meet the social, emotional and physical needs of preschool aged children.
  2. Must possess the ability to communicate effectively with parents, peers and participants.
  3. Must have knowledge of preschool curriculum.
  4. Infant and Child CPR certification required by the beginning of the program.
  5. Professional experience working with preschool children.
