Description
The City of Aiken is accepting applications for School Crossing Guards to join our Public Safety Department.
Examples of Duties
Controls traffic at crossing points for school children in pedestrian lanes; assists and protects children while they cross the street.
- Prepares school crossing zone by turning on two 20 MPH flashing lights, and places warning cones in the street
- As children arrive, takes them safely across the street, watching traffic closely and stopping cars if necessary
- When children are finished crossing, removes cones from street and turns off two 20 MPH flashing lights
- Process is repeated four times a day, when children travel to and from school
- Acts as a liaison between children, parents, and school administrators
- Participates in special events as asked by school administrators and/or the sergeant
Other Responsibilities:- Operates signal light to control vehicular traffic at school crossing
- Control children at the crossing
- Report any traffic hazards or violations
Minimum Qualifications - High School diploma or equivalent
- Knowledge of current traffic laws; emergency procedures
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, using proper grammar and spelling; ability to follow written and verbal instructions; ability to work effectively with children, parents, and school employees
- Ability to use accurate judgement of traffic flow, speed, and direction of travel; prioritize activities; regular use of hand-help stop sign, reflector vest, cones, and 20 MPH flashing lights
- Must be able to work an average of 12.5 hours per week and in various weather conditions
