GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Assists in the gathering of survey data for the formulation of engineering plans and the delineation of boundaries and construction layouts.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
Serves as rodman and chain person.
Operates level electronic distance measuring devices and transit.
Sets up survey equipment and collects data; assists with all survey duties, including alignment, grade and cross-sections.
Assists with cutting survey lines and other physical tasks.
Records field notes and sketches.
Makes calculations.
Uses legal description to establish property boundaries.
Uses road plans to identify centerline, ditch and easement alignments.
Sets grade on new construction for shoulder, ditch and pavement.
Uses shovel, axe, posthole diggers, bush axe and metal detector as needed in locating underground utilities.
Operates an assigned survey vehicle.
Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training, and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by six (6) months of experience in survey work, or satisfactory completion of surveying and/or civil engineering courses at an approved college or university; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Requires good mathematical skills.

Licenses and/or Certifications: Requires a valid driver license.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Physical Requirements: Must be able to exert 50 to 70 pounds of force occasionally, 20 to 50 pounds of force frequently, or 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must be able to ascend and/or descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like. Requires the ability to traverse irregular or uneven terrain frequently. Must be able to bend body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist, requiring full use of the lower extremities and back muscles. Must be able to bend body downward and forward by bending legs and spine. Requires the ability to position self for work in areas overhead, on ground level, or in confined spaces. Must be able to reach, extending hand(s) in any direction. Requires the ability to handle, seize, hold, grasp, turn or otherwise work with hand(s) and fingers. Must be able to work for sustained periods of exposure to outside atmospheric conditions. Physical demands exceed those of sedentary work.

Language Ability: Requires the ability to read a variety of policy and procedure manuals, work orders, logs, technical data, etc. Must be able to speak with clarity, voice control and confidence, and to articulate information to others.

Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of traffic safety, engineering, and common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions; to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in or from standardized situations; to make independent judgments in the absence of supervisor; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation. Must have the ability to comprehend and interpret received information.

Numerical Aptitude: Must be able to add and subtract totals, multiply and divide, calculate percentages and decimals. Must be able to convert measurements from English system to metric system and vice versa.

Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal to moderate levels of stress when confronted with an emergency or tight deadline. Requires the ability to exercise consistent tact and courtesy when in frequent contact with various professionals, county staff, and the general public.
