ASRT, Inc. provides scientific, information management, management consulting, bioinformatics, and administrative program support to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other Federal and private sector clients. The successful candidate will be a full-time employee of ASRT, Inc., and will be assigned to the Division of Foodborne, Waterborne, and Enteric Diseases (DFWED), National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID), CDC located at 1600 Clifton, Atlanta, GA, to provide services to fulfill the mission of the Waterborne Disease Prevention Branch (WDPB).

SCOPE OF WORK

The Microbiologist V will provide laboratory and technical support to the Waterborne Disease Prevention Branch (WDPB).

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and/or perform laboratory methods to detect and characterize microorganisms that can be detected in wastewater.
  • Conduct molecular analyses of environmental samples including polymerase chain reaction and sequencing.
  • Test environmental samples for parameters including viral, bacterial, and parasitic pathogens, microbial indicators of fecal contamination, and water quality parameters (e.g., pH, turbidity).
  • Conduct laboratory procedures and processes related to detection and quantification of pathogens and antibiotic resistance genes present in feces and wastewater.
  • Develop and coordinates national and international training courses, building laboratory and epidemiologic capacity in other countries.
  • Maintain a safe work environment and necessary inventory of supplies to maintain laboratory readiness for research and outbreak investigations.
  • Ensure calibration of all necessary laboratory instruments and logs to ensure compliance with CDC's Laboratory Quality Management Systems (QMS).
  • Ensure that incoming specimens are processed and triaged maintaining chain of custody.
  • Process environmental samples, including water, wastewater, soil, sediment, biosolids, and filters for microbial and molecular assays.
  • Prepare and perform culture of viral and bacterial organisms in laboratory and environmental samples and specimens.
  • Prepare environmental samples for molecular analysis.
  • Perform analysis of environmental samples for physical and chemical analyses using kits and meters.
  • Prepare and deliver clear, concise, and accurate reports, presentations, and scientific manuscripts.
  • Prepare environmental sampling materials and guidance documents and follow chain-of- custody procedures when receiving samples for analysis.
  • Develop standard operating procedures for laboratory analytical methods and assists with implementing and maintaining quality management system elements.
  • Assist with outbreak response efforts during national and international waterborne disease outbreaks.


Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:
  • BS/BA in Biology, Medical Technology, Microbiology, or related discipline.

Required:
  • Previous experience in a similar role.
  • Knowledge of laboratory and safety regulations including CLIA, ISO, and/or OSHA standards.
  • Experience in aseptic techniques and laboratory analysis of samples
  • Experience working with a number of biological organisms and awareness of their handling and storage.
  • Experience working with and adapting/modifying SOPs.
  • Experience working with inventory management and material shipping.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for the preparation of memos and reports.
  • Experience working with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).

Desirable:
  • Specific detailed knowledge of quality systems and regulatory requirements, handling of clinical specimens, and aseptic techniques.
  • Knowledge of documentation for equipment calibration and validation.
  • Knowledge of quality systems and inventory software functions.

Language Skills:
  • The candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
