This is an internship position with the City of Canton. Opportunities are available in a variety of departments, in both PAID and UNPAID positions.Openings may change over time. Internships are only available to current high school or college students.

Job Description

Job Description: This is a part-time position for students enrolled in a college, university, graduate program or high school. An employee in this position performs work to support a designated department and its staff. The position may be used as part of an internship program with a college, university or high school.

Examples of Work: Receives training and performs duties in support of a designated department or division within the City of Canton. Specific tasks and responsibilities will be determined by the intern's supervisor and the needs of the department. The intern will be asked to perform, participate in, and observe activities in relevance to the department. Activities vary by department/division, but may include assisting on projects, research, preparation of reports, inter-office communication, attending meetings and events, and general office tasks. Performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current enrollment in high school and at least 16 years of age (a work permit is required for students ages 17 and under) OR
  • Current enrollment at an accredited college or university in a field related to the area of internship.
  • Strong communication skills both written and orally. Strong listening skills and ability to follow instructions. Competent with use of a computer and basic comprehension of Office Suite products.

Application Process: Internship applications are available on an as-needed basis through the online job board. The availability of internships is dependent on the needs of each participating department. You must apply through governmentjobs.comand attach the following documents:

  • High school transcripts if currently enrolled in high school or recently graduated
  • College transcripts (may be unofficial) if currently enrolled in college
  • Resume (preferred)
The Department may request the intern have certain qualifications, so be sure to submit the proper documents to determine eligibility. The Civil Service Department will send eligible candidates to participating departments within the student's area of interest. Eligible students should expect to attend an interview with the department.

Participation Requirements: Students who are selected for the program are required to meet the below minimum requirements to remain an intern. If they fail to adhere to these standards, the students may be dismissed from the program.
  • Students must maintain enrollment with an accredited college, university, or high school during the internship.
  • Adherence to all City and department policies regarding attendance, work hours, computer usage rules, attire, conduct, and behavior.
  • Timely completion of all assigned tasks and responsibilities.
  • Remain professional and respectful when working with fellow employees, supervisors, and members of the public
