Building Maintenance Mechanic

Summary and Purpose

Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on various types of equipment and carries out highly technical improvements and repairs in and around campus buildings, which require extensive mechanical, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and HVAC skills.

Responsibilities/Duties/Tasks/Essential Functions:

  • Performs preventive maintenance as indicated by Preventive Maintenance program.

  • Performs corrective maintenance and building improvements.

  • Performs daily rounds as indicated on checklists; takes corrective action promptly on deficiencies noted.

  • Performs necessary recording of work requests including time spent and material used on each request.

  • Performs complex plumbing, electrical, and HVAC preventive and corrective maintenance as needed including assembly, installation, and testing.

  • Keeps up with knowledge of local building, OSHA, and ADA codes and regulations.

  • Works with Campus Safety on emergency response plan.

  • Maintains vehicle fleet.

  • Responds to any day to day campus emergency, questions or problems that arise.

  • Responds to emergency calls nights/weekends as needed, including utility outages, water main breaks, electrical outages, natural gas outages.

  • Participates in night shift turn rotation, overtime, and weekend on call rotation.

  • Performs other job duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Education Requirement

  • Must demonstrate proficiency in the skills listed above.

  • Must have three years of experience in trade or building maintenance or an equivalent combination of technical training and experience.

  • Must possess a valid Michigan vehicle operator's license and have a good driving record.

  • Must exhibit a willingness to learn new tasks to stay abreast of new technology.

  • Must be able to make decisions independently to manage work responsibilities. Most problems that arise are expected to be solved independently by the individual.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Occasional heavy lifting; climbing; carrying heavy, awkward loads; working on ladders, scaffolds, roofs and lifts.

  • Works occasionally under one or more of the following conditions: extreme heat or cold, high humidity, cramped conditions, dirty and greasy conditions, unpleasant fumes and odors.

  • Exposed to possible burns, falls, strains, sprains, electrical shock, cuts and bruises, damaged fingers or toes.

  • Must be able to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
