GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, the Equipment Operator 3 operates medium to heavy equipment on highway maintenance projects, and performs various manual and semiskilled labor functions.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate degree from an accredited college, university, or technical training institute with major course work in construction management, construction technology or related field or completion of vocational training in heavy equipment operation or related field.
  • Two (2) years' work experience in the operation of medium to heavy highway maintenance equipment; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Must possess a valid state of residency driver's license. Must remain insurable under the County's vehicle insurance policy.
  • Must have, or be able to obtain during the probationary period, a valid Class A - Commercial Driver's License issued by the state of residency.

JOB DUTIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION):

  • Operates medium to heavy equipment on highway maintenance, repair and construction projects (e.g., Drott, bulldozer, black topper, and loader, grader, backhoe, Gradeall, etc.).
  • Installs culverts and pipes; grades ditches; cuts and grades banks, berm and roadbeds.
  • Determines proper work methods and procedures within defined work guidelines.
  • Observes safety standards and procedures.
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance on equipment operated (e.g., checks fluid levels, belts, lights, brakes, etc.).
  • Instructs, directs, trains, and guides in proper methods and procedures for work projects.
  • Sets up work zones and safety areas as required.
  • Flags ongoing traffic at construction sites.
  • Operates dump truck to haul crew, fuel, equipment and road materials to and from project sites (e.g., stone, dirt, hot mix, cold mix, sand, cinders, etc.).
  • Plows snow and spreads salt and cinders.
  • Records gas, oil, mileage and hours and loads hauled on dump truck.
  • Operates front end loader to load dump truck, long arm mowers and other equipment as directed.
  • Performs various manual and semiskilled labor functions (e.g., applies tar, stone, gravel and blacktop to road surfaces; erects guardrails, fences and signs, etc.).
  • Attends meetings and serves on committees, as directed; attends training and seminars, as directed.
  • Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable OSHA safety standards that pertain to essential functions.
  • Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.
  • Due to the nature of the job, when scheduled for on-call assignment, the Equipment Operator 3 must be available to return to work after normal work hours or on weekends and/or holidays when called to do so.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
