Position Summary

The Sterile Processing Tech follows nationally recognized recommended practices and standards such as AAMI/AORN/IASCHMM for instrument decontamination and sterilization, required quality control practices, and maintenance of Sterilization equipment. Decontaminates, cleans, processes, assembles, sterilizes, stores and distributes surgical instruments for Surgery, OB, ED and some NH&C Clinics. Serves as a resource to physicians, nurses and medical staff in the Operating Room regarding surgical instruments. The OR/Sterile Processing Tech may also receive direction from the OR Clinical Coordinator and OR Charge Nurse during their assigned shift. Has close working relationships with other members of the surgical services health care team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Organizes the sterile instruments, supplies and equipment for each surgical procedure as required per the set lists in T-Doc and per the physician's preference card.
  • Follows AAMI/AORN/ISCHAMM recommended practices and/or facility policies/guidelines for decontamination and sterilization of all surgical equipment and instruments.
  • Demonstrates proper procedure and use of all high temp sterilizers (autoclaves), as well as the low temperature gas plasma sterilizer (Sterrad), ultrasonic cleaner and washer/sanitizer.
  • Decontaminates, cleans, inspects, tests, assembles, wraps/ packages and labels surgical instruments, implant, and vendor sets in preparation for sterilization by following all manufacturer's instructions for use (IFU's).
  • Completes Sterility Check points on instruments assembled.
  • Ensures surgical instruments are in proper working order. Communicates appropriately and follows the process regarding items needing repair, and items that are out for repair.
  • Utilizes instrument tracking system (T-doc). Assists in locating specific instrumentation.
  • Reviews and interprets O.R. surgery schedule on an ongoing basis to determine priority of surgical instruments needed. Assemble instruments according to department needs. Communicates on an ongoing basis with OR Clinical Coordinator.
  • Performs all quality control functions as required of sterilization loads, including documentation, preventative maintenance, mechanical, biological, chemical monitoring, product and load identification, traceability, recall procedure, and bowie-dick testing.
  • Assists with ensuring sterilization supplies are available at all times and communicates supply requests promptly with surgical buyer.
Qualifications:
  • At least 18 years of age
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Sterile processing experience required
  • Sterile Processing Certification required (or obtained within six months of hire)
Schedule:
  • 80hrs/2wks
  • Monday through Friday
  • 8:00am to 4:30pm
