Maintenance Specialist - Grounds

Position: Maintenance Specialist - Grounds

Contract: 12-month, 40 hours per week, call required, Benefits offered, Arizona State Retirement System

Salary: Salary Schedule 91 - $21.85 to $28.78 dependent of experience

Summary of Function

Maintain grounds to provide a pleasant outdoor school environment by ensuring all District facilities are attractive, safe, and orderly. Landscape and maintain grounds of District property to improve appearance, health, and attractive grounds. Performs inspections, maintenance, and repairs to ensure that all students, staff, and community are provided a safe, attractive and clean, and healthy environment for learning and work.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent certification required.

  • Valid Arizona Department of Public Safety IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card is required within 30 days of hire.

  • Valid Arizona Driver's license with 24 months of clean driving record.

  • Certification in herbicide/pesticide application preferred.

Duties and responsibilities

Prepare and maintain athletic fields for games and meets before and after the events.

  • Work chiefly in the following assignments, but may be called upon in areas not pertaining to grounds:
  • Lawns: mow, trim, edge, sweep (power and manual), thatch, cut and roll sod, insect control, fertilize, and water.

  • Garden Areas: Weed, mulch, weed control, fertilize, thin, prune, bark application, and water.

  • Trees and Shrubs: Prune, trim, weed control, fertilizer, new plantings, and water.

  • Play areas and other assignments: Seasonal care and improvements, clean catch basins, repair drain lines, smooth and grade terrain, brush and stone removal, dead or down tree removal, fence installation, fence and gate repair, playground equipment repair, maintenance of irrigation systems.

  • Remove snow and ice on driveways, walkways, parking areas, and apply ice control chemicals.

  • Maintains clean and orderly conditions in all working areas for the purpose of observing all safety practices and regulations.

  • Maintains records (e.g. equipment repair history, work orders, test reports, etc.) for the purpose of documenting the required information.

  • Maintains vehicle, tools, and equipment for the purpose of ensuring availability in safe operating conditions.

  • Oversee the inventory, ordering, and application of pesticides and herbicides and associated equipment, ensuring sufficient supplies are available for the department and are safely stored.

  • Assist Lead Groundskeeper with planning, coordination, scheduling, or minor grounds projects, ensuring productivity and personnel safety.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Working conditions

Outdoor environment. Manages all job duties with the mobility, agility, dexterity, and focused observation it takes to meet standards of performance. Moderate to extreme environmental conditions and noise levels. Prolonged periods of standing. Exposure to fumes, chemicals, and gasses. Must be able to handle stressful situations calmly and with consideration of other persons.

Physical requirements

Work involves the performance of duties where physical exertion and movement are required to perform aspects of the job. Requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, push, or pull heavy objects and materials. Assistance is available as required to perform physically demanding tasks. Work involves standing and moving for extended periods, requiring moving from one location to another, reaching, bending, stooping, crawling, turning, holding, and grasping objects. Verbal communication ability is required.

Equipment, Aids, Tools and Materials

Uses office equipment which includes but is not limited to: computers, video projectors, whiteboards, and office or instructional equipment. FUSD recognizes the ever-changing development of technology but expects all staff to keep abreast of changing technology opportunities and use tools and devices provided to them. Uses vehicle transportation which includes but is not limited to buses, vans, trucks, and other motor vehicles. Uses tools commonly found in a maintenance department.
