Summary
The Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator conducts safety programs and investigates safety concerns to ensure compliance with applicable local, state and federal rules and regulations. This position is also responsible for monitoring policies and procedures to ensure a healthy and safe work environment.

Job Responsibilities

  • Conduct safety inspections and identify violations at all GLWA properties and facilities.
  • Investigate and submit written reports on incidents involving environmental health and safety matters.
  • Respond to emergencies involving hazardous materials to aid in remediation efforts.
  • Assist in the coordination of abatement action programs.
  • Maintain up-to-date emergency response plans and procedures.
  • Ability to demonstrate and maintain current knowledge of policies, guidelines and regulations from governmental agencies.
  • Assist in compiling statistics, preparing reports and maintaining records of safety violations, OSHA/MIOSHA logs, workers' compensation cases and other documents.
  • Oversee response to potentially unsafe conditions such as smoke, fire, spills, odors, and/or exposure, risk and/or contamination.
  • Assist with handling of workers compensation cases and designing programs to control, eliminate and prevent future injuries and/or illnesses.
  • Develop policies and procedures to ensure compliance with environmental health and safety standards and best management practices.
  • Provide interpretations of rules and regulations pertaining to environmental health and safety to staff.
  • Maintain a valid Michigan Driver License and the ability to drive a motor vehicle on all terrain.
  • Follow security and safety policies and procedures in carrying out work duties.
  • Ability to develop, maintain, and implement training presentations, safety awareness pamphlets, and participate in training evolutions.
  • Participate in the development of safety guidelines and related environmental health and safety communications and educational information.
  • Operate, maintain and calibrate a variety of safety monitoring and testing equipment.
  • Serve as safety expert and liaison for GLWA in interactions with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies.
  • Order suspension of activities that pose threats to employees' health and/or safety.
  • Contract with outside licensed hazardous materials companies for handling, storage and disposal of hazardous waste as required.
  • Direct and administer preparation and maintenance of mandated environmental regulatory licenses, records, and permits on behalf of GLWA.
  • Ensure contractors working on GLWA property are in compliance with GLWA safety policies and procedures.
  • Serve on safety committees/councils as requested. Perform related work duties as assigned.
  • The Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator may be required to perform team coordination activities.


Required Education and Experience

  • Associate, Bachelor's degree or equivalent coursework; with specialization in environmental or occupational health and safety or a related discipline
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in assisting with planning and conducting successful safety programs covering a wide variety of occupations and exposures to hazardous work environments
  • Certified Safety Professional Certification preferred


Other Requirements
  • Valid Michigan Driver License
  • The ability to work irregular hours, to commute to GLWA facilities and work sites, and respond to after hour emergencies and on-call responses.

This position requires the ability to walk, sit and stand for prolonged periods, operate a vehicle, commute to GLWA work sites; verbal acuity; manual dexterity. This position is also required to wear a respirator/Self Contained Breathing Apparatus at specified job sites.

Environmental Working Requirements:

This position requires the ability to work in the plant or office environment with exposure to computer screens, working in teams and closely with all staffing levels.
