General Statement of Duties
Performs semi-skilled and skilled work in theoperation of motorized equipment for the repair and maintenance of the city'sstreets, water and wastewater pipes, or other city structures, facilities, andgrounds. Positions may be assigned to the Public Works or Public UtilitiesDepartments depending on duties and responsibilities

Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class performs skilled equipmentoperations work as part of maintaining and repairing safe and attractivestructures, facilities, streets, and grounds for use by city residents.Equipment may include sewer jet truck, rodding machine, winch and safetyharness, pickup truck and trailer, tractor, mower, loader, forklift, backhoe,dump truck, and/or other motorized equipment. Work also includes flushing waterand wastewater lines, digging, equipment maintenance, resurfacing cuts in streets,manhole repair, ditch maintenance, and other tasks as assigned. The employeemust exercise some independence of action and judgment when traveling betweenassigned worksites and completing assignments. Work is distinguished from theEquipment Operator I level by the type and complexity of work assignments, theknowledge of or license to operate certain equipment, and degree of supervisionrequired. This classification is non-supervisory, and work is performed underthe direction of a utilities crew leader or public works maintenancesupervisor. Work is evaluated by visual inspection, review of reports, andperiodic discussions with employee. Work is evaluated for compliance withsafety procedures and overall appearance of city structures and is checked dailyby visual inspection.

Illustrative Examples of Work
Operates asphalt rollers, gasoline powered tamp, street sweeper, air compressor, and other street maintenance equipment such as winch and safety harness, pickup truck and trailer, tractors, mowers, loaders, forklift, backhoe, dump trucks, and/or other motorized equipment.
Operates sewer jet truck and rodding machine to clear stoppages
Cleans and lubricates truck reels, nozzles, hoses, blades, and other preventive parts; informs supervisor of equipment repair needs
Hauls asphalt, stone, and muck to and from worksites using dump truck; mixes small batches of concrete required for work site
Performs general cleanup of facilities such as emptying garbage, picking up litter, and discarding yard waste
Serves as lead worker on a crew or team to complete assignments.
Responds to calls by city residents regarding water and wastewater problems
Performs other equipment operation and general labor duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of various motorized equipment operation and general maintenance work performed by a municipality in street maintenance and water and sewer line maintenance
General knowledge of motorized equipment maintenance and safety procedures
Demonstrated skill in the operation of a backhoe, forklift, loader, dump truck, tamp, jackhammer, and other maintenance equipment
Ability to receive and carry out instructions provided by a supervisor
Ability to identify and report maintenance needs of various structures, grounds, and facilities
Ability to serve as lead worker on a crew or team operating skilled motorized equipment to accomplish projects and assignments.

PhysicalRequirements
Workin this position is heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally,and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Employees must havethe visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of thework assigned as well as recognize and apply safety standards to workperformed.

Working Conditions
Employees are subject to outside environmentalconditions, including extreme cold and heat as well as noise levels requiringworkers requiring the wearing of protective gear. Employees are subject tophysical workplace hazards including proximity to moving mechanical parts orvehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposureto extremes of heat and cold, rain and snow, and potential exposure tochemicals. Employees are subject to atmospheric conditions including fumes,odors, dusts, dirt, mists, gases, or poor ventilation. This employee may workin close quarters, crawl space, shafts, manholes, small enclosures, smallsewage and water line pipes, and other areas which could cause claustrophobia.

Education and Experience
Completion of high school or GED equivalency and 3-5years of experience in equipment operation and maintenance work.

Special Requirement
ValidNorth Carolina Driver's License; NC Driver's License Class B
Some positions may require a NC Commercial Driver'sLicense (Class A)

36,146.00 - 56,028.00
