Definition of Classification:

The Custodian incumbent is responsible for cleaning the facilities of the University of Redlands. Daily vacuuming, dusting, restroom cleaning and sanitation, cleaning of fixtures, window cleaning, floor cleaning, interior and exterior trash removal, and additional tasks (i.e., furniture moving) as assigned.

Reporting to the Custodian Manager or Supervisor, ensure all facilities are maintained at a high level of cleanliness for all academic, administrative, and residential buildings. Responsibilities may include weekend work, temporary cover and maintain additional area when short staffed and may also include after-hours emergency response and cleaning. Work schedule is subject to change at any time to meet the business need of the University.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Cleans building components, academic/administrative/residential including light fixtures, ceilings and vents, walls, bathrooms, furniture, floors, and carpets; removes trash, dusts, polish furniture, and fixtures.
  • Cleans windows and coverings; sweeps, mops, and vacuums floors; wipes, cleans, and disinfects equipment and surfaces.
  • Cleans steps and porches inside and outside of buildings; uses ladders for high areas in need of dusting.
  • Ensures areas such as laundries and kitchenettes are clean.
  • Attends and cleans restrooms including disinfecting toilets and urinals, sinks, showers, stalls, partitions, mirrors, floors, and walls; removes trash and recycling, replaces liners, stocks paper supplies, and hand soap dispenser.
  • Completes work orders for items in need of custodial service, with special attention to safety procedures and safe work practices including security.
  • Maintains confidence and safeguards operations by keeping information confidential; adheres to all safety and University policies and procedures.
  • Works occasional required overtime based on the need of the university.
  • Contributes to department goals and objectives by accomplishing related duties as needed.
  • Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.


Qualification Guidelines

Any combination equivalent to, but not limited to, the following:

Experience/Training/Education:

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Six months of custodial work or related experience.
  • A valid California Class C CA drivers' license with a good driving record is required.Note: Out-of-state licenses are valid until appointment. A valid California Class "C" driver's license must be obtained within ten (10) days of appointment (in accordance with CA Vehicle Code 12505c).


Note: A physical examination demonstrating physical ability to perform the essential functions of the job.

Preferred

  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.


Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of custodial practices, safety rules, regulations, and procedure.
  • Ability to operate and maintain all custodial cleaning equipment and report any issues.
  • Working knowledge of cleaning chemicals.
  • Ability to clearly communicate information both verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent organizational skills, and detail orientated.
  • Ability to work as a team and independently and with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
  • Basic knowledge of personal computers.
  • Aptitude to learn new and evolving technology.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws and regulations.
  • Must be able to competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.

Hours and work schedule may vary according to the needs of the University. Weekend work and after-hours emergency response may be required.

Physical Demands:

Incumbents regularly stand for periods of time; speak clearly and distinctly to provide information; see to read fine print and operate computer; hear and understand voices over telephone and in person; use hands and fingers to operate an electronic keyboard or other office machines; walk on a regular basis; travel to various locations; finger dexterity may be required to utilize and operate the specialized tools and equipment; distinguish colors and have depth perception; reach with hands and arms; pushing, pulling lifting and occasional crawling; stoop or kneel or crouch; ascend/descent ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps and/or poles; and lift, carry and/or move objects typically weighing up to 10-25 pounds and on occasion up to 50 pounds. There may be exposure to inclement weather as well as to dirt/dust, chemicals/solvents, and noise with occasional exposure to temperature extremes and vibrations.

HIRING RANGE:Anticipated hiring range is near or at the minimum of the classification, commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training. The University of Redlands is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is defined as the Full Pay Range. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position defined as theHiring Range. Placement within the Hiring Range is determined by internal equity, and relevant qualifications.

BACKGROUND CHECK:Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. DRIVER'S LICENSE CHECK:Possession of a valid Driver's License is required for certain positions. PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EXAMS:For certain positions typically in Public Safety, Facilities, Athletics and Information Technology Services departments, employment is contingent upon a candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift in excess of 50 lbs.Public Safety Officers, in addition to a pre-employment physical exam, will also be required to pass a psychological evaluation.
