Description

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
Under supervision, operate several types of construction equipment to perform excavating, grading, paving, and related activities in the construction and maintenance of city structures and substructures, ensuring safe and proper operation of equipment at all times. Perform routine and moderately complex tasks involving shallow excavating such as repairing street failures, curb replacement, and drainage, water and sewer repairs.

Examples of Duties

Essential Job Functions:
1. Operate one or more of the following pieces of heavy construction equipment skillfully, safely, and in accordance with traffic laws and regulations: back hoe, telescopic boom excavator, pavement spreader, rollers, skid steer loaders, farm tractors, sewer machines, crack filler, or other light to heavy weight equipment.
2. Load, transport, and dump various materials such as sand, pavement, dirt, and gravel
using manual transmission tandem axle dump trucks.
3. Maintain, troubleshoot and clean equipment. Check oil, water and tire pressure.
4. Inspect job site for underground utilities, overhead obstructions and hazardous
conditions.
5. Operate snow and ice removal equipment and assists with snow removal by
performing manual tasks such as using shovel to throw materials onto roadway from
rear of moving truck.
6. Excavate and maintain proper grade on shallow excavations, exercising care to avoid
damage to nearby utility lines.
7. May be required to act in a lead capacity at job site where all other activities are
secondary to equipment operation.
8. Work as a crewmember performing manual labor when not operating equipment.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the operation of construction and maintenance equipment
  • Knowledge of the hazards and applicable safety rules, regulations and practices for operating heavy-duty equipment.
  • Proficient skill in operating motorized construction and maintenance equipment and their accessories.
  • Ability to read and understand operation manuals, verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate instructions and warnings to co-workers.
  • Ability to feel levers and listen to sound of engine to determine depth of cut.
  • Ability to hear and interpret equipment sounds to detect equipment malfunction or obstructions.
  • Physical ability to perform essential job duties.

Requirements

Education and Experience:
High School graduate or GED, and one year of experience operating various types of motorized construction equipment, or any combination of education, training, and experience providing the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform essential job functions.

Special Requirements:
Valid Class B Commercial driver's license or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire date.

Working Conditions:
Works outside exposed to extreme temperatures and inclement weather. Frequently exposed to dust and occasionally to dampness and unsanitary conditions. Subject to hazards of construction work and working around traffic. Subject to excessive noise from equipment. Subject to exposure to cut gas and electrical lines when performing excavating work. Subject to heavy lifting, as much as 50 lbs. a distance of four feet from the ground. Subject to excessive reaching, pulling, pushing, feeling and climbing to operate equipment. Occasionally requires crawling, kneeling, stooping, and crouching to remove trapped debris from equipment or to perform routine maintenance on equipment. Must wear all safety equipment in accordance with safety regulations.
