Jeffco is launching a new program for our newcomer students in a few of our High schools! This CLDE Teacher position will serve one cohort of newcomer students and teach a newcomer ELD class as well as serve as the language expert to co-teach all content areas with subject matter teachers for the same group of students.


SUMMARY: Provide equitable and inclusive education to our culturally diverse secondary student population, both as a classroom teacher and language specialist. Create a supportive and culturally responsive learning environment; implement differentiated instruction tailored to the linguistic and academic needs of multilingual learners; teach secondary level English Language Arts classes to ML students; collaborate with colleagues and specialists to develop effective instructional plans; and foster strong partnerships with culturally diverse families and communities. Utilize expertise in language acquisition, culturally responsive teaching, and cross-cultural communication to promote the academic success and social-emotional well-being of all students, while advocating for equity and inclusivity in education.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


Complete the identification, assessment and enrollment process for all students determined to have an influence of a language other than English.


Act as point of contact for newcomer strategies and supports. This includes ensuring that the front office staff, classroom teachers and administrators have a plan for welcoming newcomer students and their families to the school.


Analyze student data to make appropriate instructional decisions for MLs. Work collaboratively with CLDE resource teacher, site-based instructional coach, and other school staff to monitor student progress and determine appropriate instructional supports to have accelerated academic and linguistic growth for ML students.


Participate in and lead building level professional development as appropriate. Attend all professional development provided by the CLDE department.


Support and consult with classroom/content area teachers to build their capacity in order to ensure access for MLs to grade-level content through best practices such as sheltering, scaffolding and differentiation based on language proficiency levels.


Teach and/or co-teach appropriate English as a Second Language (ESL), English Language Arts (ELA) and sheltered content course offerings based on student language proficiency and academic data.

Co-plan/co-teach with content teachers , serving as the language expert to embed English language development skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing to provide MLs access to grade-level standards-based content across their academic day.


Collaborate with school staff around the needs of MLs in the MTSS process, during the creation, implementation and updates of IEPs and 504 plans, and in the identification process for Gifted and Talented.


Work closely with school counselors, families and students to review foreign transcripts and build student schedules to develop graduation plans for all MLs.


Administer yearly ESL assessments and update and maintain EL plans through progress monitoring and collaboration with school staff.


Ensure that schools are utilizing translation and interpretation services for families to engage in the school community.

EXPERIENCE Documented successful classroom experience working with 6-12 MLs using ELD and sheltered instruction strategies. Evidenced use and knowledge of standards-based curriculum and instruction. Experience in PLC structures and data analysis. Strong collaborative skills and experience working with classroom teachers, instructional coaches and administration. Experience with newcomer populations preferred. Demonstration of strong classroom management skills.


EDUCATION AND TRAINING Completion of a teacher preparation program or B.A. in education required. Endorsement in CLDE or LDE required. Endorsement in 7-12 ELA or other content area preferred.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, OR REGISTRATIONS Valid Colorado teaching license with English as a Second Language, CLDE or Linguistically Diverse Endorsement. Qualification in English Language Arts preferred.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Knowledge of reading/writing process for second language learners. Knowledge of sheltered instruction techniques. Commitment to ensuring student access to grade-level content standards and English Language Development standards utilizing language acquisition theory, best-practices and research-based instructional strategies. Knowledge and experience with co-planning and co-teaching, data driven instruction, and differentiation strategies. Ability to demonstrate a belief that all children can learn through differentiated core instruction. Demonstrated ability to collaboratively support colleagues in effectively planning CLDE strategies in core academic content classrooms. Ability to collaborate with classified staff, instructional coaches, administrators, and central CLDE resource teachers. Demonstrated ability to utilize data from formative and summative assessments to plan for instruction. Demonstrated commitment to teamwork in establishing and meeting student achievement goals, school goals, and professional development goals through team planning and active participation in professional development opportunities.
