The Parks and Recreation Department performs comprehensive grounds maintenance responsibilities encompassing a wide range of facilities and amenities, including parks, cemeteries, beaches, boat ramps, fishing piers, docks, play equipment, Thor-Guard Lightning Detection Systems, sports fields, and selective landscape care for County buildings.

As a Grounds Maintenance Worker, you will execute small scale landscaping operations, ground maintenance and park improvement projects in the County. You will perform work according to some procedures but will exercise discretion on how and when to complete tasks under general supervision. Your primary work schedule for this full-time position would vary, 5 days a week, including weekends and holidays, 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM.

Essential Functions

  • Drives and/or operates a county vehicle or equipment and must obey all safety policies, and roadway rules and laws.
  • Fertilizes lawn and landscaping. Maintains logs of products and chemicals used.
  • Performs pond maintenance.
  • Assists with median irrigation and landscaping.
  • Assists with liter control in parks, green spaces, roads, and rights-of-way.
  • Performs general maintenance on equipment and facilities.
  • Mows, trims, edges, and weeds turf and green spaces.
  • Completes work orders and daily paperwork of finished tasks.
  • Maintains sports fields and restroom facilities.
  • Performs minor repairs on fences.
  • Paints and cleans buildings, as necessary.
  • Inspects piers, boat ramps, walkways, gazebos, playgrounds, park amenities, tables and benches in County parks and public areas.
  • Assists with disaster preparedness and emergency response in event of a natural disaster or other emergency event.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Minimum Requirements

Education, Training, and Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Six (6) months relevant experience, preferred.
  • Successful completion of classes in turf grass maintenance or grounds maintenance, preferred.


Certificates, Licenses, Registration, Skills
  • Valid Florida Driver License or must obtain within 30 days of establishing residency in Florida.
  • Must have sufficient physical strength, agility, and stamina to perform assigned tasks under adverse conditions.
  • Ability to use effectively standard maintenance equipment and hand tools.
  • Ability to work after normal business hours (includes nights and weekend) to respond to emergencies.
  • Requires ability to maintain courteous and effective relations with County staff, elected officials, community interest groups and the public.
  • Must have or be able to obtain within 90 days certification in FEMA National Incident Management System (NIMS) courses:
    • IS-100.c: Introduction to the Incident Command System (ICS); and
    • IS-700.b: An Introduction to the National Incident Management System


Physical Requirements/Work Environment
  • Requires standing and walking most of the workday.
  • The job involves frequently lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.
  • The job requires frequent bending, squatting, kneeling, balancing, twisting, and reaching above shoulders, and on occasion climbing and throwing.
  • Tasks require simple grasping, pushing, pulling, fine manual manipulation, operating foot controls/levers, driving automotive equipment, operating a manual transmission, and working in darkness.
  • The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, and depth perception.
  • The job may risk exposure to adverse weather, moving machinery, fumes and gases, and extreme noise.

Emergency Response/Recovery Activities

  • All employees will be required to work before, during, or after an emergency. During an emergency, employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of their position, location, and work schedule to fit the needs of the County and its citizens. Emergency response duties may also include driving and/or operating a county vehicle or equipment and employees must obey all safety policies, and roadway rules and laws.
