Position overview:

The Certified Nursing Assistant is responsible for assisting the professional caregiver in the delivery of patient care, transporting patient and/or equipment and setting and maintain patient care areas. Performs patient care requiring clinical and procedural knowledge and skills requiring the use of sterile techniques, infusion monitoring, and medical equipment. Ensures that quality care is provided in an effective and safe manner consistent with the hospital's policies and procedures and within the scope of the practice established by the State of Washington. Demonstrates performance consistent with the mission, vision, and values of Pullman Regional Hospital, the relationship-based care guiding principles, the philosophy of care, goals of the unit and organization, and demonstrates quality and effectiveness in work habits and clinical practice.

Essential Functions:

  • Plan and prioritize through professional, safe, and effective patient care.
  • Provide direct personal care within scope of practice.
  • Measure and record vital signs, height and weight, and intake and output Information. May be responsible for specimen collection, skin prep/scrubs, and point-of-care testing.
  • Teaching by reinforcing education provided by the multidisciplinary team.
  • Communicate and Collaborate to promote a therapeutic relationship with patients and colleagues. Maintains a professional attitude.
  • Actively promotes and contributes to a positive work environment. Encourages equitable division of workload.
  • Accountable to stay current with the changes in profession and hospital policy. Completion of regulatory and departmental annual competencies within the timeframe set by the organization.
  • Accountable to demonstrate work effectiveness through safe completion of assigned tasks in a timely manner.
  • Follow high reliability practices set by the organization and report safety concerns. Active participation in quality improvement projects throughout the organization in order to support a safe work environment.
  • Participation in organizational wide New Employee Orientation and successful completion of departmental orientation.
  • Punctual and regular attendance is an essential responsibility. The expectation is that the employee will be present for all scheduled shifts.
  • With assistance, develops goals to develop professional growth or minimize limitations. Participates in development and achievement of unit/organizational goals and performance improvement activities.

Non-Essential Functions:
  • Assigned duties and tasks, as needed, to drive towards the vision, fulfill the mission, and abide by the values of the organization.


Required Skills:
  • Demonstrates the ability to perform the required technical skills for a certified nursing assistant.
  • Demonstrates the ability to perform the required technical skills for specific department.
  • Demonstrates the ability to learn, apply, and individualize new patient care skills and uses new equipment safely.
  • Initiates and participates in activities that enhance daily operations of the unit and organization.

Required Education, Licensure, Certifications, and Experience:
  • Maintain licensure, in good standing, acceptable in the State of Washington.
  • Active BLS (basic life support) certification.

Preferred Education, Certifications, and Experience:
  • One year or more of acute care certified nursing assistant experience.


Physical Requirements:
  • Sitting: 50%. Standing and walking: 50%.
  • Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling of supplies and patient related equipment weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • Occasional climbing of stairs to reach other levels of the building.
  • Occasional stooping, kneeling, crouching, and bending to access documents and supplies.
  • Frequent reaching and handling to complete paperwork, operate telephones, and computers.
  • Frequent talking, hearing, seeing to interact with patients, staff, physicians, and visitors.
  • Frequent moving, repositioning, and transfer of patients.

Environmental Conditions:
  • Location: Inside.
  • Occasional exposure to wet/humidity from water, steam, pharmaceutical preparations, and body fluid.
  • Occasional exposure to noise to cause distraction from hospital and patient alarm systems.
  • Occasional risk of injury due to proximity to patient care equipment such as beds and lifts.
  • Occasional risk of injury due to exposure to chemotherapy agents, disinfectants, and cleaning solutions.
  • Frequent biohazard exposure from soiled patient care items and body fluid.
  • Occasional exposure to fumes and odors from cautery, acetone, and body fluids.
  • Must wear personal protective equipment such as eye protection, masks, gowns, and gloves to provide protection from blood, bodily fluids to comply with CDC isolation precautions.
  • Must wear appropriate leaded aprons when involved in imaging exams to provide personal protection from radiation.
