The North Dakota Department of Agriculture offers hands-on experience in the field of agriculture and plant and plant pest regulation. This position provides the opportunity to work alongside experienced Plant Industries staff members to provide support in a variety of components related to the Plant Industries Division.

Hiring Range:$18.00 - $21.00 hourly

Hours: 40 hours per week; beginning of June 2024 through September 2024. We have the flexibility to accommodate an academic calendar year-round.

Duties and Tasks:

The Plant Industries Technician may perform the following assigned duties:

  • Conduct external apiary inspections.
  • Conduct pest surveys including soil sampling, insect trapping, and grain sample collecting.
  • Conduct agriculture and phytosanitary-related inspections including mills, fields and grain/seed samples.
  • Collect hemp samples for laboratory testing.
  • Assist with biocontrol collection and distribution.
  • Assist with biocontrol field days for leafy spurge insect collection.
  • Respond to apiary complaints.
  • Assist with outreach and education presentations.
  • Assists with clerical/mailing needs for various pest surveys.
  • Assist as needed with all programs within Plant Industries Division.

In-state travel is required and involves mostly day trips and some overnight stays when needed, work outdoors in all weather conditions to complete inspections, insect trapping and sample collections.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with other team members, clients, and the public.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products including Word and Excel
  • Critical thinking and analytical ability
  • Ability to travel overnight.
  • A valid class D driver's license for in-state travel to required site locations.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Completedcoursework or pursing a bachelor's degree in the biological sciences (entomology, plant pathology, biology, horticulture, plant science, etc.), or agriculture related field.
  • Experience processing and maintaining information in a database.
  • Experience providing information to customers regarding registration, licensing, or applications.
  • Experience performing outreach and/or education.
  • Work experience conducting pest surveys.
  • Work experience presenting to various audiences.
  • Work experience performing inspections.
  • Knowledge of GPS technology.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Outlook.
