Job Details
This Plumber Journeyman role requires skilled work in the installation, modification, and/or repair of plumbing and related systems, equipment, and fixtures, as well as the ability and willingness to participate in the installation, modification, and/or repair of these systems, equipment and fixtures.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plans and lays out work and engaged in the installation, repair, and maintenance of water, air, gas, sewer, steam, and hot water heating and distribution systems; supervises and inspects the installation and repair of plumbing pipes, sinks, traps, valves, faucets, vents, pumps, and similar equipment, fixtures, and apparatus.
- Responsible for the installation record keeping so work meets or exceeds the state codes.
- Estimates job labor and materials costs; maintains job and cost records; requisitions materials, supplies, and equipment.
- Conducts regular inspections of work in progress and on completion; participates in the more complex plumbing tasks.
- Confers with officials on proposed plumbing projects and makes recommendations.
- Recruits and trains skilled and trades helper personnel.
- Establishes safety and work performance standards for subordinates.
- Performs related work as required, including:
- Selecting type and size of pipe and related materials and equipment, such as supports, hangers, and valves, according to job specifications.
- Cutting pipe using a pipe cutter, pipe saw, power tools (band saw), and pipe cutting machine.
- Threading pipe using threading machine.
- Knowledge in safe operation of Victaulic roll grooving and cut groove operations.
- Assembling and installing a variety of metal or nonmetal pipes and pipe fittings, using threaded, wrapped, soldering, brazen, fused, or cemented joints, and hand tools.
- Securing pipes to structure with bracket, clamps, and hangers, using hand and power tools.
- Knowledge in safe and professional testing of piping systems for leaks by increasing pressure in pipes and observing gauges attached to pipes for indication of leaks.
- Connecting pipe pieces and seal joints, using cement, glue, or mechanical fasteners.
- Checking slopes and alignment for conformance to requirements, using levels or lasers and transits.
- Dig trenches to desired or required depths, by hand or using trenching tools.
- Grade and level trench bases, using tamping machines and hand tools.
- Comfortable working outdoors on uneven surfaces.
- Miscellaneous duties or responsibilities as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard high school or vocational school and 5 years of related experience and considerable experience as a journeyman plumber or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Thorough knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment of the plumbing trade.
- Thorough knowledge of the prevailing codes of the plumbing trades.
- Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the work.
- Ability to supervise the work of skilled and semi-skilled subordinates.
- Ability to analyze defects in plumbing equipment and to determine necessary repairs.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and to lay out work from prints, rough plans, sketches, drawings, and broken parts.
- Ability to make estimates of labor and materials needed for plumbing jobs.
- Ability to maintain good working relationships with personnel of other departments.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in writing and orally.
- Skill in the use and care of the standard tools and equipment of the plumbing trade.
- Ability to work in any weather element/condition.
- Ability to work with management and safety on any critical lift plans.
