The Street Transportation Department is seeking a Principal Engineering Technician to perform difficult, complex, and technical paraprofessional engineering duties, and supervise a team of various levels of engineering technicians who review dry utility plans proposing installation in City rights of way in accordance with department policy. In addition to utility plan review, this position and team perform utility coordination duties for Capital Improvement Projects including paving, storm drain, streetlights, sidewalk, water, and sewer. Work is performed under the supervision of a Plan Review Coordinator, or another supervisor who reviews work based on codes and compliance.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Ideal candidate will possess an understanding of underground utility construction and be able to communicate with Project Managers, City contractors, and utility contractors.
  • Ideal candidate will possess strong leadership and problem-solving skills as well as the ability to multitask and work well under pressure and with deadlines.
  • Ideal candidate will have substantial knowledge of principles and practices of engineering as applied to the installation of dry utilities in the City's rights of way and Capital Improvement Project construction.
  • Ideal candidate will have experience performing utility and civil plan reviews.
  • Knowledge of City of Phoenix codes and policies and possess the ability to provide excellent service and a willingness to work with internal and external customers.

SALARY

Pay Range: $61,526.40 - $110,510.40 annually.

Hiring Range: $61,526.40 - $95,451.20 annually.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Six years of experience in paraprofessional engineering work, including three years of paraprofessional civil engineering experience (or one year of experience at the level of Chief Engineering Technician, or Chief Drafting Technician).
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:
  • Management, supervisory, or team leader experience.
  • Experience performing dry utility or civil plan reviews.
  • Experience working with electronic permitting systems.
  • Experience coordinating or managing all, or portions of a capital project.
  • Experience creating reports and documents using MS Word and Excel.
  • Experience reading and interpreting civil engineering and dry utility plans.
  • Experience providing excellent customer service as well as working in a team environment.
