Job Summary:

This position reports to and supports the Teaching Laboratory Coordinator. The Lab Technician is primarily responsible for preparing culture media, reagents, and cultures for microbiology laboratory courses, including Introduction to Microbiology Laboratory, Pathogenic Microbiology Laboratory, and other laboratory courses as needed. This person also is responsible for running and maintaining preparatory lab areas and equipment. Maintenance of the prep lab includes purchasing materials needed for preparation of culture media and reagents. The Lab Tech assists with monitoring and standardizing teaching methods and course materials among all sections of Introduction to Microbiology Laboratory. This person assumes the duties of Teaching Lab Coordinator when that person is unavailable. The tech assists with oversight of teaching microbiology laboratory courses and supervision and training of undergraduate assistants and Graduate Teaching Assistants. This position requires the ability to handle laboratory equipment and perform basic microbiology techniques, as well as excellent communication skills with a diverse student body and ability to work effectively with undergraduate assistants and Graduate Teaching Assistants.

Work includes a standard working hours: Monday through Friday 10:00am to 7:00pm. It may require some nights and weekends hours depending on class schedules. The tech be able to work two (2) hours at a time in an environment where the temperature can reach 95-98 F. The tech works with a wide range of chemicals and living microbial organisms. The environment includes exposures such as equipment posing burn danger with surface temperatures to 350 C . The employee must be able to lift a minimum of 35 pounds, climb ladders, work standing and sitting for extended periods of time.

Education & Experience

Position Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

Two years experience in research and/or higher education teaching laboratories. Post-secondary research training may be substituted for experience. Ability to organize workload effectively to meet deadlines, work autonomously and collaboratively, and under pressure.

Ability to operate laboratory equipment. Knowledge of and ability to perform basic microbiology techniques. General knowledge of audio/visual classroom equipment. Proficiency in laboratory classroom instruction. Ability to work with others, including teaching laboratory personnel and students.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's in Microbiology or related field. Three years of teaching laboratory experience. Experience supervising and training teaching lab personnel. Experience managing prep lab operations.
