Job Summary

Operates, through automatic controls, all equipment in the HVAC mechanical room to ensure safe and reliable operation and consistent temperature throughout the facility. Inspects operating boilers, chillers, cooling towers, hot water heaters and all associated pumps, air handling unit, variable air volume units and actuators to ensure equipment is operating properly in accordance with prescribed standards. Ensure water lines, water levels and relief valves are in good condition and functioning properly. Conducts inspection to ascertain whether equipment is operating at maximum efficiency and are in compliance with OSHA regulations and local fire codes. Makes repairs to piping system and equipment. Implements a preventative maintenance program. Conducts emergency repairs on all types of equipment. Supervises support contractors to ensure work is performed to standard and that work tickets are properly completed and forwarded for processing.

Qualifications

Ability to operate, maintain and repair industrial boilers and chillers, hot water heaters, cooling towers, pumps and valves, air volume equipment and other HVAC equipment.

Licensures, Certifications and other requirements

Class 1 Engineer License

Education

Must possess a high school diploma or a certificate of equivalency (GED)

Work Experience

Experience operating industrial chillers and proper use of industrial refrigerant gases.

Work Environment

Work is performed in a controlled environment and involves some exposure to moderate risk of accidents and requires following basic safety precautions.

Tour of Duty: Required to work rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays

This position is in the collective bargaining unit and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through an automatic payroll deduction.

Position Designation: This position is deemed as "Safety Sensitive" pursuant to Section 410 of Chapter 4 of the D.C. Personnel Regulations, in addition to the general suitability screening, individuals applying for or occupying safety sensitive positions are subject to the following checks and tests:

RESIDENCY PREFERENCE AMENDMENT ACT OF 1988

A person applying for a position in the Career Service, Educational Service, Management Supervisory Service, a line attorney position in the Legal Service (series 905), or an attorney position in the Excepted Service (series 905) who is a bona fide District resident AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION for the position may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present proof of bona fide District residency and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
