General Statement of Duties

The Skilled Trades Specialist position is in the Facilities Operations division of General Services. This position is part of a team that works to maintain the operations of the HVAC group of Facilities Operations. This position will work on all aspects of HVAC and building automations systems within the County.

This position will require lifting, climbing, working off of ladders, bending, stooping and knelling. It will require on call duties and some after hours work. All tools will be provided as well as a vehicle to use for County business.
Distinguishing Features

A successful candidate should have the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
Thorough knowledge of the procedures, materials, and equipment related to the HVAC systems and the maintenance of these systems.

Considerable knowledge of HVAC Systems installation and maintenance and problem indication.

Knowledge of a variety of systems including but are not limited to air cooled, water cooled, hot water systems, chilled water systems, VAV systems, cooling towers and building automation control systems.

General knowledge of the occupational hazards of building trades and maintenance work and associated safety precautions.

Working knowledge and understanding of all types of HVAC systems and how each component within the system operates in conjunction with the other components and how that impacts the overall operations of the system as a whole.

Knowledge of and the ability to follow all safety practices as required by OSHA and Forsyth County.

General knowledge of County purchasing policies and procedures.

Ability to assign, direct, and supervise the work of others.

Ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications.

Ability to exercise tact and extend courtesy in contact with the general public.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on physical climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.

Ability to perform simple to complex movements requiring moderate coordination.

Must have visual perception and ability to discriminate colors.

Must be able to perceive and discriminate odors/sounds.

Must be able to perform manual labor for extended periods of time as required by work assignments.

Minimum Education and Experience

Graduation from high school or GED and at least three years of maintenance experience in the HVAC trade.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered for the minimum qualification requirements.

A valid NC drivers license is required.

This position is subject to working in high security areas governed by the US Department of Justice's Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy and therefore requires successfully passing a more stringent criminal background check.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Check thermostats; change belts, bearings, motors, compressors; clean coils; and monitor air humidity and ventilation.

General HVAC and electrical work including installing electrical conduits and fittings.

Routing and pulling wiring; and replacing faulty switches. Identify components in advanced commercial/industrial/residential refrigeration, electrical, pneumatic circuits, understanding how each component works, and diagnosing and correcting problems in the refrigeration circuit, using manifold gauge set, pressure/temperature chart and temperature measuring tools for maintenance and troubleshooting.

Schedule shutdowns for repair/rebuilding of pumps including chill water, heating water and condensation pumps.

Replace various sizes and types commercial/industrial/residential AC refrigeration compressors, motors and electrical components Install of HVAC systems tasks include:

Run copper piping, PVC and wiring for the system.

Troubleshoot, repair, navigate and make modifications to County Building Automation systems. To include Siemens, Johnson Controls, Schneider systems.
