DescriptionThe purpose of this classification is to operate light and medium-sized equipment and perform manual work functions associated with construction, maintenance and repair of City streets/roads, drainage systems, right-of-way areas, parking lots, parks, recreation facilities, grounds areas, or other areas of assignment. Emphasis in on the operation of trucks, tractors, and other equipment where driving and maneuvering the vehicle constitutes the majority of the work required to complete tasks; incumbents may occasionally operate equipment at higher levels, but not as their primary work function. Classification is reserved for those positions where operation of included equipment is the primary function of the job. Positions in the Wastewater Department are subject to 24-hour call.Examples of DutiesOperates various equipment and vehicles to complete tasks related to the maintenance, upkeep, installation, and construction of City grounds, property, utilities, rights-of-way, and other infrastructure for departmental operations; drives vehicles over public roads, work sites, rights-of-way, parks, public works facilities, and other City property; maneuvers in and around traffic, parked cars, equipment, utilities, and other obstacles; obeys all traffic laws and safety guidelines; monitors immediate environment and work area to ensure the safety of operator, other workers, the equipment, and the public.Drives single, tandem, and tri-axle dump trucks or brush trucks in order to transport and haul materials between original and final destinations for use in maintenance and construction projects; positions vehicle to allow for the most efficient and effective loading or dumping of materials; secures all doors, gates, and fasteners to prevent spillage or loss of load; operates dumping mechanism to dump materials at appropriate locations; operates truck and dumping mechanism simultaneously to spread materials along prescribed path to required specifications.Operates tractors and tractor-mounted mowing equipment to mow/maintain rights-of-way, parks, and other City property, including operation of side-arm, bush hogs, and rear-mounted mowers, but not exclusively small riding mowers; scouts path for and removes rocks, debris, and other obstacles that may cause damage to the equipment, property, or the public; determines proper settings and adjusts mowing/raking equipment for desired height and trajectory.Assists skilled operators with the operation of combination sewer cleaning trucks (jetvacs) and sewer video trucks; drives and maneuvers the equipment; may operate the various mechanisms under close supervision of the primary operator; performs manual work functions in support of these tasks.Operates truck- or trailer-mounted knuckle-boom arm to pick up debris and load it into the truck; secures all doors, gates, and fasteners to prevent spillage or loss of load during transport.Operates asphalt roller to flatten and compress dirt, gravel, asphalt, and other materials.Utilizes asphalt patching truck to make repairs to existing streets and paved surfaces by filling potholes, cracks, and other deformities; drives truck to work location and positions vehicle to allow for optimum delivery of asphalt; utilizes dumping mechanisms to apply specified amount of hot asphalt to desired area; operates spraying mechanism to aim and distribute a fine stream of asphalt along cracks in the pavement; utilizes rakes, shovels, and other tools to manually spread and seal asphalt; marks newly repaired pavement as appropriate.Drives special purpose trucks with mounted tanks to transport and distribute water, insecticide, oil, or other liquids for use in maintenance, upkeep, and construction projects; determines proper settings and adjusts spraying mechanisms to distribute desired amounts of liquids for both informal and controlled applications; operates flusher/water truck to rinse debris from streets and apply water to construction sites to reduce dust levels; operates spraying mechanism on mosquito truck to distribute insecticide; operates asphalt distributor to apply oil along prescribed path for street construction prior to pavement of streets.Inspects and prepares equipment for safe and proper operation prior to beginning work for the day; performs light maintenance on equipment, which includes changing oil, refueling, and refilling lubricants; cleans vehicles, beds, and mounted equipment upon completion of assignments; secures vehicle after use.Transports, loads and unloads various materials and equipment used in projects.Performs manual work functions associated with construction, maintenance and repair projects, which may include repairing roads/asphalt, compacting road surfaces, installing/repairing pipe, constructing/repairing ditches, repairing/replacing drainage culverts, repairing potholes, constructing sidewalks, cutting pipes, installing fences, installing/repairing irrigation systems, mowing right-of-ways, cutting trees and brush, assembling playground equipment, digging holes or trenches, shoveling materials, lifting/moving heavy materials, flagging traffic, and picking up debris/litter.Assists in setting up special events/activities; assists with traffic control and litter pickup; assists departments with moving heavy furniture, files, or other heavy materials. Responds to emergency calls during inclement weather, or other emergency situations.Utilizes precautionary safety equipment and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.Receives, prepares or completes various forms and documentation, including work orders, time cards, maintenance reports, spray records, diagrams, maps, manuals, reference materials, and other documents; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems; communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information and assistance; takes and relays messages or directs calls to appropriate personnel; returns calls as necessary.Typical QualificationsHigh school diploma or GED; supplemented by one (1) year of experience in the operation of light and medium-sized equipment, such as various mowers and small tractors, dump trucks, brush trucks, shuttle trucks, etc.; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.Must possess a valid driver's license.Will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana driver's license at time of appointment and a valid State of Louisiana Class D driver's license within 60 days and maintain throughout employment for this classification.May be required to obtain Flagging certification.The City of Alexandria is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, age, sex, color, religion, national origin, or disability.We offer a complete benefits package to full-time employees including health care, dental, vision, retirement, deferred compensation plans, flexible spending accounts, life insurance, long-term disability, holidays, vacation, and sick leave.To learn more details, visit our website.Agency City of Alexandria, LAAddress 625 Murray StreetP.O.
