As a Property Handler, you will play a crucial role in the safe handling and installation of valuable artworks and objects for auction. Drawing upon your prior experience and expertise, you will collaborate without our team to ensure the smooth execution of all logistics functions necessary to facilitate auctions and exhibitions.

HOURS: Monday to Friday, 12:00PM to 8.30PM (Second Shift) and 4:00PM to 12.30AM (Third Shift)

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work closely with Specialist Departments, Registrars, and Operations staff to move property throughout the building
  • Receive, open, tag and scan property as directed
  • Move property to and from loading docks, departmental storage, photography and exhibition locations
  • Prepare exhibition space including but not limited to placement of movable walls, pedestals, platforms and other display materials, and lighting
  • Place property for display, including but not limited to onto shelves or platforms, hanging or mounting property onto walls, and assembling property
  • Stand exhibition and assist clients in viewing property (remove from wall or case, move furniture, etc.)
  • Break down exhibitions and release sold property for shipping
  • Maintain safe property handling following established protocols and procedures to maintain the integrity of the items in our care
  • Function as helper on the truck or van, if any
  • Perform other tasks consistent with these responsibilities as required

IDEAL EXPERIENCE & COMPETENCIES
  • Prior experience in art handling or related field is essential.
  • Strong understanding of industry best practices and protocols for property handling.
  • Substantial lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying of property required.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 75 pounds.
  • Ability to execute tasks independently without supervision.
  • Maintain cleanliness and appropriate presentation of exhibition and back of house spaces and equipment
  • Property handlers must be well groomed and in the proper uniform which must be worn and pressed at all times
  • Display a positive attitude and adhere to Sotheby's Service Standards
  • Detail-oriented approach with a commitment to accuracy and professionalism
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Overtime available and sometimes necessary.

The expected base salary for this position ranges from $24.50/hour plus an additional 8% differential for the Second Shift or 10% differential for the Third Shift. It is not typical for offers to be made at or near the top of the range. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, licensure or certifications obtained. Market and organizational factors are also considered. In addition to base salary and a competitive benefits package including health & wellness initiatives, museum access, paid time off including for your birthday. Successful candidates are eligible to receive a milestone bonus based on years of service.
