The California Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation (CDCR) is seeking to hire a Legal Student Assistant. Under the close supervision of Office of Legal Affairs staff, the Legal Student Assistant will assist with a statewide project to create a "Brady List," which assists prosecutors in meeting their criminal discovery obligations. The Legal Student Assistant will also be responsible for reviewing confidential and sensitive peace officer personnel documents and then applying a nuanced and careful analysis under the long-standing criminal discovery principles identified in Brady v. Maryland. The Legal Student Assistant will be responsible for submitting written recommendations regarding peace officer eligibility on a "Brady List," and participating in collaborative discussions regarding legal principles that support the recommendations. Training will be provided.

This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.

UEI does not allow students to hold more than one UEI Job at a time, or work in more than one account per pay period. UEI employees who are considering leaving their current UEI Student assistant position for a different UEI student assistant position should inform their supervisor in writing and provide at least a week's notice.

UEI is not a multi-state employer. UEI only employs candidates who live and work in the state of California. If selected for the position you must reside in California and all worked must be performed in the state of California throughout the course of employment.

Prerequisites

Must be a law school student attending classes during the regular term (fall, spring, and winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list.

Students must be enrolled at a minimum in six-semester units or nine-quarter units for undergraduate students; four-semester units or six-quarter units for graduate students.

Additional Work Schedule

Student Assistants and Graduate Student Assistants generally work up to 24 hours per work week (Sunday-Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per work week during breaks (Winter, Spring and Summer).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Legal Student Assistant must be registered and attending at an American Bar Association (ABA) or State Bar of California-accredited law school with a 2.5 or better grade point average.


Preferred Qualifications

  • All applicants will be screened for breadth and depth of general and related experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
    • Ability to communicate effectively, as well as, to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted daily.
    • Critical thinking and writing skills.
    • Good work habits and dependability.
    • Ability to time manage independently and prioritize workload.
    • Interest in criminal law and procedure.
    • Completion or current enrollment in criminal law, as well as, criminal procedure.
    • Given teleworking, it will be imperative that this candidate can work independently, yet, also be available during normal business hours for collaborative evaluations of cases.
    • Ability to demonstrate discretion with handling of sensitive and confidential documents.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review and analyze confidential documents.
  • Independently research and write memos with a fully supported legal conclusion and recommendation.
  • Screen, research and fact verify information in legal documents.
  • Analyze documents and conduct under the legal principles of criminal discovery.
  • Assist with other special projects and tasks as assigned by Assistant General Counsel and/or Office of Legal Affairs staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Physical Requirements

Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers and scanners with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Working Conditions

Work is currently performed remotely. However, should this change, work will be performed in an office environment.

Employees will be required to work according to the current UEI remote workplace policy and sign a UEI telework agreement.
