Reports to: Site Coordinator

Supervises: None

Schedule:Monday-Friday, 7am to 6pm during the summer months

Position Summary

Youth Development Professionals provide safe and enriching afterschool programming for at-risk elementary students with an emphasis on improving academic outcomes and social-emotional skills.

Job Functions

Afterschool Program

  • Supervise elementary students in a safe and enriching environment.
  • Facilitate academic, recreational and social-emotional activities that align with 21stCentury Community Learning Center and other Community Learning Center outcomes.
  • Implement developmentally appropriate and engaging lessons and activities that align with school standards and focus on improving academic and social-emotional outcomes for students.
  • Provide safe transportation home for students via agency vehicle.
  • Ensure afterschool spaces are safe, clean and developmentally appropriate.
  • Track attendance and participation as requested.
  • Assist with data collection and reporting as requested.


Student and Family Supports

  • Communicate student and family needs with Lead Youth Development Specialist to facilitate referral to community resources.


Community Involvement

  • Promote positive relationships between Volunteers of America, Dakotas, the Sioux Falls School District, families served and neighborhood/community partners.
  • Help plan and participate in special events (e.g. Lights on Afterschool, parent nights, etc).
  • Regular collaboration with school staff.
  • Assist in supervision of program volunteers.


General

POSITIONS QUALIFICATIONS SKILLS & ABILITIES

Education:High School Diploma and/or state education requirements required. An Associates degree orsome college coursework in child/human development, education, psychology, social work orother related field preferred.

Experience:Previous experience working with at-risk youth and/or families and diverse populationspreferred.

Skills:Excellent verbal, listening, and written communication skills.

Certifications &Licenses: Valid driver's license required.

Other Requirements:All candidates must be at least 18 years old.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, manually manipulate, reach outward and above shoulders, speak, climb, crawl, squat, kneel, and bend on a daily basis.
  • Capability to lift, carry, push or pull up to 100lbs on a daily basis.
