Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems sector is looking for section managers - Manager 2 Engineering, Structural Design/Analysis - to oversee structural engineering teams within the Vehicle Engineering Directorate. These positions are in San Diego, CA and will report directly to the Vehicle Structures Department Manager.

In your role, you will lead a cross functional Vehicle Engineering (VE) team of structural design or structural analysis engineers and be responsible for leading all relevant managerial tasks. Technical statement of work may be geared towards structural design or analysis based on the selected candidates.

Approximately 20% of the role will be performing functional homeroom duties such as attending functional staff meetings, management of personnel (performance reviews, direction & coaching), and coordination of job assignments, staffing, and recruiting. These responsibilities include:

  • Providing leadership and direction to section members including day-to-day support for the operation of the functional organization

  • Ensuring team members have sufficient statements of work

  • Managing employee performance (including engagement strategies for higher performers and corrective actions for lower performers)

  • Coordinating with programs to ensure appropriate staffing actions are developed and executed relative to the section

  • Ensuring employees are familiar with and use required engineering processes and tools

  • Resolving critical/urgent program/technical issues

  • Supporting relevant VE Northrop Grumman Aeronautical Systems Community of Practice is expected

The remaining time (approx. 80%) will be spent in the Design and/or Analysis Engineering disciplines, based on candidate experience, and as directed by the Vehicle Engineering program IPT Lead. You will be responsible for establishing, maintaining, and facilitating communications, tasking, scheduling, and technical reviews with each individual contributor's execution lead in San Diego, CA. These responsibilities may include:

Structural Analysis Responsibilities:

  • Understanding of the requirements and methods of analyzing composite and metallic structures to determine structural viability that leads to certification

  • Perform structural analysis including static, dynamics, stability, and damage tolerance analysis

  • Build Finite Element Models (FEMs) using CAD geometry, meshing, and running solutions

  • Able to manipulate large scale finite element models

  • Document structural analysis methods and implementation using calculation aids and propose new methods depending on the needs of the project

  • Compute margins using appropriate analysis methods

  • Able to support material review board (MRB) and nonconformance to ensure we have sound structural substantiation

  • Solid understanding and background in loads development, preliminary and detailed design, static analysis, FEM, D&DT, fatigue, bolted and bonded interfaces, repair, structural test, and in-service mods, repairs and extensions

  • Lead root cause and corrective action requirement analysis

Structural Design Responsibilities:

  • Designs major components or major portions of a functional system to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations.

  • Develops basic data and makes preliminary layouts, sketches, and notes necessary to present design proposal

  • Investigates pertinent design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials and equipment, interchangeability, replaceability, strength-weight efficiency, and contractual specification requirements and cost

  • Coordinates with other organizations affected by design development.

  • Creates layouts of complex assemblies and details parts of devices, mechanisms, and structures

  • Checks completed layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications, and accuracy of calculations and dimensioning

  • Identifies design errors, omissions, and other deficiencies, and recommends revisions and/or improvements in design layout to responsible engineers or designers

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in a related Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline from an accredited institution and 9 years of relevant professional/military experience; OR Master of Science degree from an accredited institution in a relevant STEM discipline and 7 years of relevant professional/military experience

  • Experience with aircraft structural design and/or analysis

  • The ability to obtain and maintain an active DoD Secret (or higher) clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current Secret clearance (or higher)

  • Master's degree in Aeronautical, Aerospace, Mechanical, Systems Engineering

  • Prior management or engineering team lead experience

  • Experience with industry standard design tools including CATIA V5, NX, Teamcenter Enterprise/Unified, FEMAP, and NASTRAN

  • Proficient knowledge of manufacturing process and Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)

  • Experience with composite material design/analysis

  • An excellent communicator who works well in a team environment

Salary Range: $151,900 - $227,900

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
