JOB SUMMARYPerforms repair, preventive maintenance and operational safety inspections on the school bus fleet, motor pool vehicles and related vehicular equipment. Reports to the Fleet Supervisor/Assistant Director.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and other related problems in district vehicles and equipment.Overhaul and rebuild engines, differentials, brake systems, and other components by repair and/or replacement of defective parts.Perform general troubleshooting and tune-ups, utilizing diagnostic equipment.Routinely inspect assigned vehicles to ensure compliance with Washington State Patrol (WSP) requirements. Ensure that district school buses and motor pool vehicles are ready for twice-yearly state inspections.Respond to road calls/accidents and perform roadside repairs as requested; assist director/assistant director in investigating all district vehicle accidents.Assist in recommending changes and additions to bus specifications in the interest of safety, durability and maintenance economy.Evaluate needs and recommend purchase of new or replacement shop equipment, machines, tools and related items.Repair and replace seat frames, glass, sheet metal, latches, and other body components.Ensure proper handling and disposal of hazardous material.Steam and/or pressure wash vehicles as needed.Comply with all Federal, state and local laws and regulations for the maintenance, repair and operation of equipment and machines.Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical and regulation publications.Enhance department and organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.Maintain a clean, safety oriented work environment. Assist in cleaning and organizing of the shop, parts room and other maintenance facilities.Drive a school bus or support vehicle on an emergency case as directed by director/designee.Perform other tasks at the discretion of the Director/Assistant Director.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education/TrainingHigh school diploma and/or GED equivalent.Associate's degree or diploma in diesel mechanic or automotive engineering or any other related field of study preferred.Five (5) years' experience in the automotive maintenance field. Vocational training may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis, not to exceed two years.Minimum of three (3) years full-time experience as a diesel mechanic in a truck or bus maintenance facility.Possess or willingness to obtain current valid State of Washington driver's license with Class B CDL with appropriate endorsements.Possess valid Medical Examiners Certificate certifying medical ability to drive a school bus.Maintain current State of Washington School Bus Driver's Authorization.Maintain motor vehicle driving record acceptable to the district's insurance criteria and OSPI.Maintain current First Aid/CPR card.Pass a Fingerprint/Background check.ASE Certification preferred.Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesAwareness of operational safety requirements in a shop environment and ability to apply and follow procedures and requirements per regulatory bodies.Sound understanding of using all repair tools, equipment and testing machinery.Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relations with other employees, management and the public.Ability to be able to work in a team environment.Experience using school bus and vehicle related diagnostic hardware and software.Knowledge in the use of fleet management software.Ability to meet and maintain punctuality and attendance expectations.Ability to communicate clearly, orally and in writing.Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and be flexible.

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

This position requires constant safety awareness working around and under heavy buses and power machinery; required to lift, move and position heavy objects in excess of 50 pounds; required to stand for prolonged periods; exposed to high noise levels from buses and machinery; required to take precautions to avoid exposure to fumes and chemicals; required to work outdoors in inclement weather on emergency repairs; required to wear protective clothing. Must adhere to all district health and safety policies.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT AND SALARY

As outlined by and in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) of Mead Classified Trades Association (MCTA) and Policies and Procedures of Mead School District. The salary range for the position is: Min $31.06 - Max $32.66. New employees may be credited for previous relevant experience within the job description, with initial step placement up to step 6.

A typical work year consists of 260 days which includes 13 paid holidays. Each employee shall accumulate twelve (12) days of sick leave per year. An employee employed less than a full work year shall be entitled to a proportionate part of the sick leave allowance. A maximum of three (3) days of annual leave are provided for all employees based on the employee's scheduled employment hours per day to be used for an absence during work hours. Newly hired year-round employees will accrue vacation at a rate of eleven (11) days or 88 hours per year/7.33 hours per month. Vacation may be taken only after the provisional period has been successfully completed.

Employees anticipated to work more than 630 hours per year will be eligible for Benefits through the School Employees Benefits Board (SEBB) Standard benefits include Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, and Long-Term Disability. Positions anticipated to work 70 hours or more per month for at least 5 months over a 12-month period are eligible for Retirement through the State Department of Retirement Services.
