The Position

We currently have an opening for a Paper Machines Shift Supervisor based out of our location in Port Townsend, Washington.As a Paper Machines Shift Supervisor you willprovide shift direction, leadership and supervision for Front End employees and operations.

We use a blend of virgin and recycled fibers (Kraft and OCC pulp) to produce Kraft pulp, paper, containerboard, medium and market pulp. Job Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates safe behavior and work practices. Ensures the crew follows all mill and job safety requirements and standard operating procedures. Completes annual performance reviews and observations.
  • Promptly investigates safety, fire, and paper quality incidents. Completes and submits an investigation report prior to the end of the shift.
  • Ensures proper operation and management of processes and equipment to meet customer quality requirements.
  • Monitors mill operations and directs the crew to meet safety, quality, operating, process, and production targets/objectives. Secures appropriate resources to return the process/operation to target when deviations occur.
  • Accountable for crew training and accurate crew performance evaluations.
  • Knowledge of the labor agreement and administers it consistent with the contract language.
  • Confronts unprofessional behavior and takes appropriate disciplinary action.
  • Effectively communicates and implements management/business direction with crews.
  • Department commander for oil spills, fires, emergency response, evacuation alarms, and water and power outages.
  • Works closely with Back End shift supervisor to coordinate mill activities to achieve business results.
  • Expected to challenge the status quo and strive to work with crews to continuously improve crew and operating performance.
  • Responsible for shift administration of mill lock-out policies & procedures, confined space entry, hot work, and fall arrest procedures.
  • Responsible for & accountable to the Paper Machines annual operating budget.
  • Special projects or work as required.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication and leadership skills.
  • Working knowledge in order to manage employee relations, materials & products, and equipment under the "Responsibility & Authority" section.


Responsibility and Authority
  • Employee Relations
    • Interpretation / Action of Corporate policy and procedures.
    • Paper Machines hourly pay management authorization,
    • Crew Training Provider/Coordinator for job skills and safety,
    • Emergency Response Team Training Coordinator,
    • Distribute & communicate departmental & corporate policy & information memos,
    • Track employee development through annual performance reviews.


Materials or Products
  • Paper Machines' raw materials
  • Production of all paper grades and market unbleached kraft pulp.


Equipment
  • All Paper machine, finishing, and shipping equipment.


Business Contacts
  • External: Chemical, felt, wire, and process equipment suppliers. Customers and customer visits as required.
  • Internal: Back End Shift Supervisor, mill superintendents and supervisors, union officers, Health & Safety representatives, maintenance crews, and technical services employees.


Required Education
  • Degree in Engineering, Chemistry, Pulp, and Paper Science, or commensurate level of pulp and paper experience and training.


Required Experience
  • Five years' experience in the pulp and paper industry.
  • Demonstrated supervisory skills to at least the relief foreman's level.


Employment Terms
  • Full-time, Exempt position
  • Salary range: $90,000 to $110,000 DOE.
  • 2 weeks paid vacation or more depending on the position.
  • Full-time employees receive 160 hours of sick leave upon hire and then earn eight hours of sick leave per month.
