MAJOR FUNCTIONS

MAJOR FUNCTIONS

Under the leadership of the Director of Public Works and general guidance of the Environmental Services Manager. This is a position requiring manual labor duties of a semiskilled nature with great attention to safety and detail. Collecting and removing litter from roads and rights of way in the City is the primary responsibility.

This position is designated as emergency essential position that requires performance of emergency duties and actions to prepare, repair, and recover the City before, during, and after any adverse storm events (hurricane, tornado, tropical storm, winter storms, severe rain fall events, thunderstorms, flooding, etc.) or other conditions (natural or manmade).

  • Maintains cleanliness by picking up litter along designated roadways.
  • Load and unload filled litter bags at designated locations.
  • Responsible for setting up, moving and removing highway awareness signs throughout the workday.
  • Maintains proper maintenance of traffic to keep the area safe.
  • Perform manual work functions associated with trash and garbage pickup and removal including lifting/depositing trash into truck and emptying garbage carts onto truck.
  • Removing spilled garbage, trash or debris from the curbsides and from ground around receptacles.
  • Perform maintenance tasks to keep truck and equipment in good working condition including checking fluid levels and tires and washing/cleaning truck and equipment.
  • Report equipment problems or malfunctions to appropriate supervisor.
  • Communicates via two-way radio and/or telephone including responding to dispatch requests which will require providing information and relaying messages.
  • Maintains effective, cooperative and team focused working relationships with team members, leadership and the public.
  • Refers/reports complaints and concerns from citizens related to garbage or trash service to appropriate supervisor.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of tools and equipment used in manual labor work.
  • Ability to understand and carry out basic oral instructions.
  • Strong skills in safely operating in and around traffic.
  • Ability to work independently and be self-motivated.
  • Ability to read a map and navigate City streets, alleys and roadways.
  • Positive and professional demeanor when engaging with the public.
  • Sufficient physical strength to perform heavy manual labor work.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, cooperative and team focused working relationships with team members, leadership and the public.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma is preferred.
  • One (1) years' experience in manual labor maintenance preferred.
  • Valid Driver's License.

A comparable amount of training or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
