Job Description:

The Department of Physics & Astronomy at Louisiana State University conducts forefront scientific research in a variety of areas. The Electronics Development Group in the LSU Physics and Astronomy department seeks an Electrical Engineer that will work with a multidisciplinary team of faculty and staff to develop, implement, and maintain custom electronics for scientific research experiments ranging from high altitude ballooning platforms to international particle physics detectors. The candidate may have the opportunity to participate in the dissemination of information related to the projects by contributing to the writing of articles and participation at conferences.

The ideal candidate is someone who has a solid hands-on electronics background and an enthusiasm to research/learn new engineering skills. Our projects often start from a blank slate where we communicate with faculty to create design requirements, build/test prototypes to full production runs and then conduct final verification of the design. Due to the small size of our group, the candidate for this position will be an integral part of this process with daily duties that range from generating design requirement documents, procuring parts, designing circuit boards, troubleshooting electronics, soldering/assembling electronic systems, programming firmware, conducting verification testing on the designed equipment. Because of the variety of operating environments of the research experiments, the design process often requires creativity and research beyond standard electronic systems. Furthermore, our group is involved in several engineering educational programs and employs student workers. Thus, the candidate for this position should enjoy working with and mentoring college students.

Responsibilities: Serve as electronics engineer for the Electronics Development Group (EDG) and the Department of Physics and Astronomy's Technical Services Group. Assist with the management of workflow for the EDG and Services Group. Provide comprehensive technical services to research groups on campus. Serve as point of contact for designated projects for the research groups. Assist with project planning. Provide cost estimates and design reviews. Create and implement plans for prototypes. Evaluate test results and make decisions for product development. Serve as project or systems engineer as required. Determine and order parts and supplies necessary for completion of assigned projects.

Design, implementation and repair of electronic circuits, instruments and systems for experimental research. Systems may include analog and digital electronics, hardware/software co-design, embedded processors, field programmable gate arrays (FPGA), complex programmable logic devices (CPLD), data acquisition systems, and electronic monitoring/control systems. Troubleshoot, repair, calibrate and maintain a wide variety of scientific instruments used in the teaching and research missions of the Department of Physics and Astronomy and other departments. Provide custom modifications to instruments and equipment for specialized purposes including interfacing scientific instruments to computer systems.

Recommend, write specifications for and coordinate procurement of electronic and computer components, instruments and systems. Participate in hiring, counseling, and training of student employees. And other related duties incidental to the work described above.

Minimum qualifications: Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related field with 1 - 3 years of related experience.

Preferred qualifications: Experience in Altium, Labview programming, FPGA and microcontroller programming, Matlab/Python.

Due to the nature of the position and/or position responsibilities this position shall be subject to drug/alcohol testing in accordance with University Policy Statement 67.
