Job Details

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Ensure that all PSI safety procedures, rules and regulations are followed and met.
  • Satisfactorily complete the Fire Watch / Fire Extinguisher training course.
  • Stay alert and be responsible to actively prevent and fight any incipient stage fires.
  • Do not perform other duties in combination with fire watch activities while hot work is in progress.
  • Have a clear view of and immediate access to all areas of hot work.
  • Have the proper fire extinguisher or charged water hose ready for use.
  • Ensure that you have the ability to communicate with workers in the area of hot work.
  • Isolate or cover combustible materials that cannot be removed with fire-resistant blankets and flame retardant chemical gels or solutions. Wet down the area surrounding hot work.
  • Do not abandon the hot work area during breaks or interruptions, or at the end of work shifts, unless properly relieved.
  • Continue fire watch duties for at least thirty (30) minutes after completing hot work, unless released by a member of the HSE Department after a site inspection.
  • Follow all confined space entry and hot work requirements established by Philly Shipyard, the shipyard competent person (SCP), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)-certified Marine Chemist, or Coast Guard authorized person.
  • Shut down any hot work activity deemed unsafe and take the appropriate corrective measures to restore and maintain safe conditions. Immediately address all concerns or refer questions to your employer or the SCP.
  • Watch out for fire hazards in the workplace while work is performed by other employees.
  • Maintain the conditions and requirements stated on the safety permit.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision

  • Performs other related duties as required and assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILTY

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION AND EXPEREIENCE

  • 6 - 12 months' experience preferred, but not required. Training can be provided on site.
  • Previous experience in shipyard preferred, but not required.

  • Previous employment / experience as a fire watch is beneficial.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

Environmental exposures are similar to those found in most heavy industrial settings and may include noise, heat, cold, vibration, dust, fumes and smoke. Work may be carried on indoors or outdoors, and may involve exposure to inclement weather conditions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. A range of motion sufficient to perform general lifting, carrying, bending, climbing, working at heights, extended walking or standing, etc. is required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Be able to successfully pass a Drug and Alcohol screening (subjected to random drug screen tests).
  • Must be physically and medically qualified to wear required PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) for the job.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift 50+ pounds, bend, and stretch, stand for extended periods of time, climb stairs, reach, twist, work at elevated heights and small spaces.
  • Lift/push/pull/carry up to 20-30 lbs. on a frequent basis.
  • Bend, squat, crouch, crawl, and kneel.
  • Climb ladders and stairs in a safe manner maintaining three (3) points of contact.
  • Sufficient hand grip and coordination to carry and operate tools and equipment.
  • Work at heights above 12' if required.
  • Access work areas through 18" x 36" openings and work in confined spaces for prolonged periods of time if needed


POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

This is a full-time, safety-sensitive position. Standard days and hours of work vary by department, days and hours determined by department schedules.
