Position Summary

The purpose of this position is to operate medium equipment, with the occasional use of light or heavy equipment, used to excavate, load, transfer, or move dirt, gravel, or other material in the maintenance or construction of streets, city infrastructure, and other public properties as assigned. Essential Job Functions

Operates a variety of medium equipment, with the occasional use of light or heavy equipment, to and from work locations,construction sites, etc; performs minor maintenance and service checks onequipment; and transports tools and equipment to and from work sites.Responsible for operation or and routine and preventative maintenance ofequipment. Follows schedule to ensure all tasks are completed. Identifiesissues and notifies supervisor.

Performs semi-skilled labor work to various maintenance and constructionactivities.

Loads and transports equipment to properties. Sets up work zones asappropriate and insures safety procedures and proper use of safetyequipment at all times.

Education and Experience

Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational,technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge is equivalent to four yearsof high school or equivalency.

Three years of experience of operating light to medium equipmentis required.

Depending on the assignment, may assist in Traffic Operations as needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Work requires the occasional direction of helpers, assistants, seasonalemployees, interns, or temporary employees.

Work may require providing advice to other outside direct reportingrelationships on specific problems or general policies. Contacts may requirethe consideration of different points of view to reach agreement. Elements ofpersuasion may be necessary to gain cooperation and acceptance of ideas.

The position receives general instructions as to methods, procedures, anddesired end results. There is some opportunity for discretion when makingselections among a few, easily identifiable choices. The assignment is usuallyreviewed upon completion.

Work requires a comprehensive, practical knowledge of a technical field withuse of analytical judgment and decision-making abilities appropriate to thework environment of the organization.

Intermediate ability to read papers, periodicals, journals, manuals,dictionaries, thesauruses, and encyclopedias and ability to deal with asystem of real numbers; and practical application of fractions, percentages,ratios/proportions and measurement. Basic ability to write simple sentencescontaining subject, verb, and object, and/or series of numbers, names, andaddresses.

Ability to learn geography of City including major streets and landmarks.

Special Requirements

Ability and willingness to work flexible hours and weekends and holidays as needed. Required to be available for "stand-by" duty.

This position is classified as a DOT position and is subject to drug and alcohol testing, ongoing driver record checks, and is subject to all U.S. DOT regulations during the course of employment.

Licenses and Certificates

Must possess a minimum of Class B Commercial Driver's License.

Work Environment

Heavy physical labor requiring physical strength and agility. Work involvesextreme exposure to disagreeable elements, and extreme weatherconditions. Involves continuous outdoor work with frequent exposure topoor weather conditions. Physical demands include frequent lifting of heavyobjects weighing over 50 lbs. Continuous physical exertion, requiringheavy muscular effort with resulting fatigue of arms, back or sensoryfacilities. Sufficient physical stamina to walk a majority of the workday.Extensive bending, stooping, and climbing.
