Department Summary

Infrastructure Services provides flexible, reliable, and secure traditional and cloud infrastructure services (network services, platform services, data center operations and management, and unified communications) enabling connectivity, productivity, and security for UCLA. Infrastructure services strives to optimize performance increasing storage, elevating the network, and reducing downtown.Platform Services enables hybrid cloud for computing, storage, and services environments with a mix of on-premises infrastructure, private cloud services, and public cloud. This team creates seamless orchestration across various platforms to stimulate agility, scalability, reliability, and lower infrastructure costs. This allows for applications and components to interoperate across boundaries improving developer productivity as well as regulatory compliance and security. Platform Services oversees provisioning, hosting, and administration of physical and virtual servers and related storage.
Position Summary

The Principal Platform Architect will be responsible for advancing the strategy and priorities of platform services for the university. This role will be charged with increasing the innovative capabilities of server, storage, and database technologies. The Principal Platform Architect will conceptualize the platform services architecture by identifying business requirements, creating designs and prototypes, and executing testing activities. The Principal Platform Architect will develop overall platform standards, guidelines, leading-edge practices, and approved techniques and approaches for the organization. The Principal Platform Architect will act as a thought leader for the organization's platform vision and goals. The Principal Platform Architect will positively impact UCLA's operations and culture by enhancing UCLA's platform capabilities in service of the institution's academic mission. This team member will advance the University's mission by delivering exceptional information technology services comprehensively and consistently across faculty, staff, and students. This role will execute UCLA's vision while modeling UCLA's culture and values.


Salary & Compensation

*UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Salary offers at the top of the range are not common. Qualifications

  • Seven years Experience working in one or more of the following fields: platform services, information technology, cloud services data services, application services, IT service management, project management, or (Required)
  • Ten or more years Experience working in one or more of the following fields: platform services, information technology, cloud services data services, application services, IT service management, project management. (Preferred)
  • Experience in complex higher education environments, serving academic and administrative functions of a large public university. (Preferred)
  • Demonstrated ability to translate business needs into long-term architecture solutions. Expertise relating to the design and development of platform services, including servers and storage, across the organization. (Required)
  • Expertise relating to the design and development of information technology platform architecture across the organization. (Required)
  • Enterprise-level understanding of and experience with key modeling and description languages used to map highly complex business processes to architectural components, develop common, large-scale architectures, and create reference frameworks. (Required)
  • Robust knowledge of IT platform services frameworks, principles, and industry leading practices. Knowledge relating to the design and development of software across the organization. (Required)
  • Knowledge and understanding of platform services principles related to the storage of research and academic assets. (Required)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and is able to communicate complex technical ideas to a diverse community of colleagues and stakeholders. Skill relaying technical information to audiences of technical and non-technical stakeholders. (Required)
  • Able to establish and advance positive working relationships, providing guidance and recommendations to diverse community of colleagues including team members, stakeholders, and customers. (Required)
  • Advanced organizational skills and is able to balance competing priorities. Skills leading concurrent projects to various stakeholder types. Ability to work in a project-based environment using project management practices. (Required)
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills, using judgement to provide solutions to various technical issues of significant scope and complexity. Able to define gathering efforts evaluating solution options and making strategy-aligned recommendations. Demonstrated ability to make decisions with integrity. (Required)
