The Opportunity

The Texas A&M School of Medicine seeks to fill a position for the Head of the Department of Cell Biology and Genetics (CBGN). Reporting to the Dean of the School of Medicine, the Department Head is a member of the senior leadership team of the School working collaboratively with the central administration, fellow department heads, center and institute directors, and faculty members to support and advance the strategic goals of the University, School and Department. The School of Medicine seeks applications from distinguished academicians with proven scientific, strategic and collaborative leadership skills. The successful candidate should be a leader committed to the development of the Department as a leading research unit of the School of Medicine with a focus on extramural grant funding and academic excellence in support of the research and educational missions of the institution. The School welcomes applications from outstanding scientists with international reputation in the fields of or related to biochemistry, genetics, cellular and molecular biology, data science and translational biomedical research.

The Organization

Texas A&M University is a top-tier research university with >$1billion of annual research funding and an outstanding record of training undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. The School of Medicine is the largest of five schools at the Texas A&M Health Science Center, which is based on the main university campus in Bryan/College Station, Texas and includes campuses distributed throughout the State of Texas. The CBGN Department, which includes the Institute of Regenerative Medicine, is located on the main Health Science Center campus in Bryan/College Station. Research in the CBGN Department spans a wide range of both basic and translational biomedical research, from basic studies on the structure and function of biomolecules to genetics and genomics and stem cell therapeutics. Emphasis is placed on understanding normal and abnormal biological functions at the molecular and cellular levels and also includes translational studies on therapeutics and regenerative medicine. The educational mission of the Department encompasses the training of medical and graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. The Department's faculty teach in the pre-clinical years of the undergraduate medical curriculum, which includes the new Intercollegiate School of Engineering Medicine and in the graduate (PhD, MD/PhD and MD+) programs. The CBGN Department faculty participate in multiple university-wide Interdisciplinary Degree Programs in fields such a Neurosciences and Genetics and many have strong collaborative ties with Texas A&M University research groups in the Chemistry, Biochemistry and Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering Departments and the Institute of Biosciences and Technology.

The Position/Qualifications

Applicants should have a PhD, MD, MD/PhD or equivalent degree and a record of scholarship commensurate with appointment as a tenured Professor of the School of Medicine. The successful candidate will be expected to conduct a vibrant, externally-funded research program and should have an international reputation and track record of success in some aspect of cellular and molecular medicine. The successful candidate will also have a demonstrated commitment to excellence in academics including medical, graduate and post-graduate education and the mentoring of trainees and junior faculty. The candidate will be expected to provide leadership for the CBGN Department, promoting the development of innovative research programs that align with the research mission of the School of Medicine, the Health Science Center and Texas A&M University ( Successful candidates should have prior experience in directing research and educational programs and should have demonstrated leadership qualities commensurate with directing an academic unit. Since the Department Head has administrative, financial, and operational responsibilities the successful candidate should have a record of commitment to a culture of institutional stewardship and transparency and efficient and effective business operations. As a key leader at the Texas A&M School of Medicine, the new Head will be expected to build on the successes of prior leadership, leveraging the talents of a diverse faculty, staff, and students, to chart continued success and increase the national andinternational reputation of the Department's research and educational endeavors.
