Application Engineering Manager

Our client headquartered in Greater Birmingham, AL is seeking a Technical Services/Application Engineering Manager to fill a supervisory level role in overseeing the day-to-day operations and activities of the application engineering department. They will lead a team of application engineers, designers, drafters, and other staff.


They will establish and enforce team policies, procedures, and client relations standards. The Application Engineering department develops engineered-to-order drawing packages and manufacturing Bill of Materials (BOM) based on customer drawings and specifications. The right candidate will provide technical guidance and leadership to deliver world class customer service experience.


Job Duties and Essential Functions

  • Develop and maintain customer relationships by understanding current and future needs of customers. Our client s customers are primarily developers of power substations so this would include Electric Utilities, independent power providers, and contractors all over North America.
  • Work with internal/external customers to support manufacturing improvements such as design changes or design for manufacturability.
  • Manage an ISO 9001 certified engineering change process.
  • Serve as a manager, mentor, knowledge resource, and escalation point for employees. Build credibility and trust within the department.
  • Establish and maintain reporting tools to help ensure quality and quantity of team output.
  • Assist with team building and recruitment activities as required.
  • Great interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent time management and teamwork skills.
  • Communicate with other departments, customers, third party certifiers, and vendors on technical matters as required.
  • Oversee designs based on the interpretation of IEEE specifications, customer specifications, and acceptable manufacturing processes.
  • Generate/Review drawings as required.
  • Provide supervision/development of Application Engineering personnel and assist in business planning.
  • Review or develop bill-of-material to meet customer product requirements.
  • Ensure accurate costed BOM s and routings.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor s degree in engineering (mechanical or electrical preferred).
  • 5 years engineering and 3 years supervisory or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience managing an engineered-to-order engineering department.
  • Knowledge/Experience of engineering principles, IEEE specifications, test methods, continuous improvement, computer hardware/software including CAD and CNC programming.
  • Demonstrated leadership and problem-solving skills.
  • Comfortable working on deadlines and can demonstrate sound time management and critical thinking skills.


Nice to Have Qualifications

  • Professional Engineering certification and MBA preferred.
  • Industry experience and knowledge of electric power industry and high voltage equipment.
  • Experience with design of power substations or development of substation steel structures.
  • General machine design experience.
  • Proficiency CAD such as SolidWorks, including modeling of parts and assemblies, and production of ANSI compliant technical drawings.
