Summary:

Works cooperatively with students and families, school districts, tribal departments, law enforcement, tribal court, and other agencies developing goals and support toward a successful academic career to effectively intervene and deter truancy and delinquent behavior.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and document attendance of all enrolled and community member students.
  • Meet with schools, students, and families to review attendance information and find the root cause of their attendance issues.
  • Notify parents of unexcused absences, contact parents and guardians to discuss poor attendance and implement truancy prevention plans.
  • Make referrals for excessive absences, non-compliance, counseling, or other appropriate services, and make recommendations to tribal prosecutor to ensure adjudicated students receive specific services to meet their needs.
  • Complete reports for evaluating intervention attempts for truancy/delinquent behavior and submit in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Collaborate throughout the community with law enforcement, mental health workers, mentors, and other social service providers, in addition to educators as needed.
  • Provide a continuum of support, including meaningful incentives for good attendance and consequences for poor attendance.
  • Create measurable goals for truancy prevention plan and keep good record keeping of on-going progress toward those goals.

Requirements (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities):

  • Bachelor s Degree in education, social work, Native American Indian Studies, Native American Indigenous Studies, counseling or related field preferred; -or- Five (5) years of truancy prevention experience.
  • One (1) year in truancy counseling experience preferred.
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with Native American communities preferred.
  • Must have a valid, clean driver s license.
  • Must successfully pass all applicable background checks and drug screens.
