The City of Monroe has a population of 36,392, and is the county seat of Union County. The historic Victorian Courthouse, built in 1886, sits magnificently atop a central square and draws attention from every direction. To the north lie County and City government buildings - to the south, quaint downtown shops, restaurants and businesses. Several fountains and small park areas are part of the downtown landscape. A thriving Highway 74 Corridor is where most major restaurants, hotels, and shopping are found. The City of Monroe is also home to the Charlotte-Monroe Executive Airport.

The City of Monroe operates under a Council-Manager form of government. The City Council sets policies and enacts ordinances, which are carried out under the City Manager's direction. The City Council is comprised of an elected Mayor and six council members. The City has approximately 500 Full-time and 200 Part-Time employees within the following department: Administration, Communications and Tourism, Downtown and Facilities Maintenance, Economic Development, Energy Services, Engineering, Finance, Fire Department, Information Technology, Parks and Recreation, Planning, Police Department, and Water Resources.

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK

Performs basic work maintaining and repairing a variety of vehicles and equipment; does related work as required. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Automotive Mechanic Supervisor.

This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects, and some heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms' length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS

Maintaining and repairing automotive and construction equipment; troubleshooting problems; maintaining records and files. Performs preventive maintenance and repair on a variety of vehicles and equipment including automobiles, tractors, heavy construction equipment, and landscaping equipment. Replaces or disassembles and rebuilds engines; makes necessary repairs and adjustments; replaces worn or defective parts. Performs scheduled preventive maintenance such as tune-ups, checking lights, tires, brake linings, wiper blades, horns, suspensions, etc. Operates equipment such as lift jacks, tire changers, air guns, battery chargers, wrenches, cranes, air compressors, welding units, and other hand tools. Lubricates, repairs, and replaces parts and filters; cleans and replaces spark plugs, installs radiator hoses, and replaces belts. Maintains, repairs, and rebuilds engines on a variety of lawn and garden equipment, tractors, mowers, tillers, etc. Maintains, repairs, and rebuilds motors on a variety of hand tools, power and chain saws, blowers, trimmers, edgers, push mowers, etc. Takes down, repairs, and reassembles small engines, grounds maintenance, and related equipment. Services, cleans, and replaces parts, plugs, filters, chains, etc. Sharpens, repairs, balances, and replaces blades, bits, augers, chisels, scissors, reels, etc. Changes, repairs, and replaces tires; replaces and checks brakes, replaces hoses, etc. Performs work on electrical, exhaust, transmission, brake, and hydraulic systems. Performs related tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

General knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of automotive passenger cars, trucks, construction and maintenance equipment; general knowledge of necessary safety precautions; skill in the use and operation of tools and machinery used in automotive repair work; ability to detect by inspection worn or broken parts; ability to keep records of repairs and service operations; ability to adapt available tools and parts to specific repair problems; ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately; ability to lift heavy objects; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or GED and minimal experience in repairing automotive and power-driven equipment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of an appropriate commercial driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina within six months of employment.
