Summary

The City of Soldotna Public Library has an opening for a regular full-time Library Clerk II. This posting is open until filled with a first review of applications on May 15, 2024

Under general supervision of the City Librarian, performs paraprofessional library work that may be assigned to one or more areas of library operations of the Joyce K. Carver Soldotna Public Library including youth and adult services, reference, circulation, technical processing, and literacy services.

This position differs from the Clerk I class in that the incumbent will independently perform more difficult clerical, technical, and paraprofessional tasks, including serving as a lead worker.
Detailed Work Activities

  • Participates in primary library operations that may include, but not be limited to: circulation, youth and adult services, community outreach, reference and reader's advisory, collection development, and technical processing.
  • Assists patrons in making effective use of library facilities, programs, services, equipment, collections, and online resources.
  • Plans, coordinates, and implements library services and programs.
  • Prepares and distributes publicity and promotional materials.
  • Responds to and resolves difficult or sensitive questions and problems with patrons
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Expressing oneself clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Entering and retrieving data with sufficient speed and accuracy to perform assigned work. The ability to type at least 45 words per minute is desired.
  • Planning, organizing, prioritizing and presenting work.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with community partners and colleagues.
  • Responding to requests and inquiries from the general public in a tactful, courteous, and effective way.

Desired Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:
  • Library principles, practices and procedures, including privacy, confidentiality and intellectual freedom in a library context
  • Customer service methods, practices and procedures.
  • Books, authors, subject genres, and reference and research sources and resources.
  • Computer applications applicable to library operation, including new library technologies as well as word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and database applications.
  • Library automation, computer software and equipment, mobile devices, and eReaders.
Ability to:
  • Interact positively with a wide variety of patrons and staff in a busy environment.
  • Use initiative and independent judgment within established policy and procedural guidelines.
  • Understand and follow library policies, practices and procedures.
  • Acquire a working knowledge of the location of materials in the library.
  • Understand and carry out verbal and written directions.
  • Communicate effectively in writing and orally to assimilate, understand, and convey information, in a manner consistent with job functions.
  • Organize ongoing work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and follow-up on assignments with a minimum of direction.
  • Sort and organize materials by the Dewey Decimal System in alphabetical, numerical, and topical order and attend to detail to ensure accuracy.
  • Effectively operate standard office equipment, cash register, and computer workstations.
  • Accurately perform basic math. For example, addition and subtraction when counting cash.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive information.

Qualifications

Preferred Qualification:
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Frontline customer service experience
  • One year relevant library experience
Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two years customer service experience
  • Applicable library experience

Must have a valid driver license. Must have and maintain a good driving record.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed in an open office or meeting room setting, adequately heated, lighted, and ventilated.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Performs a wide range of physical motions, which may include routine and repetitive bending, stooping, reaching and pushing, moving and carrying library materials. Must be able to repeatedly lift books weighing between 1 and 10 pounds, including overhead lifting, and to push book trucks weighing excess of 50 pounds.

The employee will also be required to move tables and chairs to set up for meetings, and lift or move boxes up to 35 lbs.

Step Increases
  • Regular employees serve a six month probationary period (police officers serve one year). After completing six month probationary period (or six months service for police officers) with a favorable evaluation, regular employees will be eligible for a step increase. Step increases are given annually thereafter based on a favorable evaluation.
