Pay Range: PSE 1 Salary Schedule

JOB SUMMARY

  • The job of "Maintenance Helper" is done for the purpose of assisting other personnel; preserving landscaped areas in a healthy, attractive and safe condition; preventing slipping hazards; transporting items over designated routes; ensuring safe operation of vehicles; and loading and unloading items; and maintaining a safe working environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Upholds board policies and follows administrative procedures
  • Assists other personnel with general maintenance work including painting, roofing, plumbing, carpentry, grounds keeping and glazing for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities
  • Maintains landscaping (e.g. mowing lawns, pruning shrubbery, planted areas, irrigation, fences, playgrounds, parking lots, etc.) for the purpose of preserving landscaped areas in a healthy, attractive, and safe condition
  • Inspects school or district facilities for the purpose of ensuring that the site is suitable for safe operations, maintained in an attractive and clean condition, and/or identifying necessary repairs due to vandalism, equipment breakage, weather conditions, etc.
  • Shovels snow from sidewalks and driveways, and spreads sand, salt or ashes for the purpose of preventing slipping hazards
  • Performs minor maintenance and repairs to such equipment as lawn mowers, sprinklers, hedge trimmers, outdoor chairs and benches, for the purpose of maintaining a safe working environment
  • Drives and maintains vehicles to transport items (including but not limited to mail, packages, print shop materials, money, furniture, etc.) on designated routes
  • Maintains vehicles to ensure safe operation
  • Load/unload items for distribution to assigned site locations and/or individuals
  • Prepares documentation for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information
  • Serves as backup to the Warehouse Specialist for the purpose of ensuring their work activities are completed in a timely manner.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
  • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities
  • Assists in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations, and board policies.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prior job-related experience with increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Skills to safely drive utility vehicle; operate material handling equipment and tools, power tools commonly used in grounds keeping/horticulture/general maintenance; skills to operate forklift, dump truck with equipment trailer, large mowers and tractors; perform basic math to calculate quantities of items with speed and accuracy
  • Knowledge of safe driving practices; methods for receiving, storage, delivery of materials; methods of materials handling; Hazard Communication and Safety Data Sheet requirements. Knowledge of methods and use of tools and equipment utilized in grounds maintenance; methods of basic plumbing repairs and equipment.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions; work independently with minimal supervision; perform a variety of tasks; work cooperatively with students, staff and the public; present a positive public image; maintain a neat, clean personal appearance; wear clothing appropriate to tasks being performed; have regular and consistent work attendance and work shifts as assigned, including weekends; and have a telephone and respond to off-hour emergencies as needed
  • Ability to walk for prolonged periods, drive for extended periods, read maps and schedules, adhere to route schedules, and maintain written records.
  • Significant physical abilities include lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling/stooping/crouching, reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversations, near/far visual acuity/depth perception/visual accommodation/field of vision.

Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required:

  • Valid driver's license, evidence of insurability, Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance, valid CPR/First Aid cards, and must be bondable.

  • Must have excellent moral character and be able to get along with staff, students and adults; must present a positive public image, maintain a neat, clean personal appearance, wear clothing appropriate to tasks being performed, and have regular and consistent work attendance; and work shifts as assigned, including weekends. EDUCATION

  • High school diploma and/or equivalent; prior job related experience
