Lab Technician - Synthesis


Job Details

Synthomer is seeking a Laboratory Technician for the R&D Lab in its Coatings & Construction business unit. This position provides an excellent opportunity to contribute innovative technology and product solutions to deliver growth for multiple Synthomer product lines and markets working under the guidance of R&D and lab managers to conduct front-end laboratory research in polymer synthesis and characterization.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Work in a safe manner, obeying all EH&S guidelines and proactively working to improve safety and housekeeping in the lab and the office.
  • Collaborate amongst a team in the R&D group and cross-functionally as needed.
  • Follows procedures for conducting emulsion polymerization in a lab setting and pro-actively communicates if a procedure does not look correct.
  • Carry out emulsion polymerization to include running more than one polymerization at a time (same recipe) under supervision.
  • Set-up, program and replace equipment as needed to maintain temperature control, flow rates, etc.
  • Isolate and test the polymer product for basic physical properties.
  • Understand the key factors which affect product quality parameters and document any deviation from the written procedure or expected results.
  • Document activity in the laboratory database accurately and in a timely fashion.
  • Handle and clean laboratory glassware safely on a regular basis.
  • Submit samples and/or interface with Material Characterization and other internal partner organizations.


Qualifications

  • High school Diploma and/or equivalent.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience working in an industrial laboratory environment; 3 or more years preferred.
  • Knowledge of industrial lab safety practices and procedures including familiarity with handling hazardous materials safely.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and SharePoint.
  • Excellent skills in: problem solving, troubleshooting, multi-tasking and project management.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with effective listening skills and commitment to teamwork.
  • Attention to detail to ensure all issues are addressed effectively and efficiently.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, communication (written and oral), interpersonal, and time management skills.
  • Highly motivated person with action-oriented personality.
  • Ability to work independently with supervision in an empowered team atmosphere.
  • Strong advocate for safety.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate Degree in Chemistry or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a lab or manufacturing plant performing emulsion polymerization and common analytical techniques.
  • Chemicals manufacturing experience.
  • Familiarity with handling hazardous chemicals safely.
  • Prefer knowledge and experience utilizing SAP.
