Job Title: Controls Engineer


Location: On site in Richmond, VA


Job Summary:

Responsible for electrical, electronic and computer control systems used in projects worked on by the Corporate Engineering group. Works individually or with a project team to upgrade, design and build control systems. This may include outside contractors or working with other Carpenter departments such as data processing or manufacturing branches.

Position Scope:

Develop concepts for machine control. Program/change machine controls and PLC's. Serve as team leader, providing direction for Carpenter employees and outside contractors. Negotiate with vendors and contractors outside the company. Work with manufacturing to identify their needs. Work primarily in an engineering office environment. Work in machine shop, or plant where machines, their components, and other process testing is being performed. A major challenge of the position involves the maintenance of necessary knowledge and skill level associated with various types of machine control equipment and operator interfaces.

Education: Major duties and responsibilities of the job can be satisfactorily performed with completion of a bachelor's degree.

Experience: More than ten years' experience required to perform the job.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 5-10 years minimum experience in the programming and control of industrial machinery and processes.
  • PLC programming experience using Allen Bradley RSlogix softwares and Studio 5000 required. Siemens
  • PLC using Step 7 is strongly preferred.
  • Graphical HMI programming with FactoryTalk View and/or Wonderware is required.
  • Experience with AC drives such as Allen Bradley Powerflex series, and SEW Eurodrive is preferred.
  • Experience drawing in AutoCad
  • Experience in electrical controls hardware design, including safety systems.
  • Experience with Fanuc and ABB robots; programming via teach pendant
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and computer skills are required.
  • Ability to travel 20%-30%.

Essential Functions:

  • Investigate and generate ideas related to industrial processes and machinery controls. This is frequently performed in conjunction with the Chief Electrical Engineer and Vice President of Engineering and members of a project team.
  • Design and create industrial processes and machine control systems.
  • Compile estimated and actual costs for the design and manufacture of control systems.
  • Negotiate with and oversee work performed by outside contractors and vendors.
  • Design tests, research ideas and evaluate new approaches and materials related to control systems.
  • Create specification documents. Create electrical, electronic and engineering drawings, machine control system descriptions, flow charts and sketches.
  • Create computer programs needed for control systems
