Job Details

Role and Responsibilities:

Under direction, performs a variety of skilled mechanical tasks involved in installation, maintenance, and repair and servicing various types of motor vehicles and/or motorized construction equipment; does other related work as required.

  • engines and components, power trains, suspension systems, and other mechanical units of motor vehicles such as automobiles and construction equipment.
  • problems of motor vehicles based on descriptions, test drives and testing equipment.
  • cleans, or replaces defective parts such as spark plugs, wheel cylinders, mufflers, tail pipes or brake shoes.
  • ignition system, lights and instrument panel.
  • air conditioners and service components such as compressors and condensers.
  • parts such as crack shafts and cylinder blocks using lathes, shapers, drill presses and welding equipment.
  • rebuilds, repairs and services diesel, gasoline, and other types of combustion engines, automatic and non-automatic transmissions, heavy duty line systems and controls.


Qualifications and Education Requirements

One (1) year of training in automotive technology at accredited college or vocational school. Two (2) years of experience in the maintenance of various types of motor vehicles and/or construction equipment such as bulldozers, tractors, cranes, road graders, power shovels, or similar equipment. Appointees will be required to possess a valid NJ driver's license, CDL desired. Note, an Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) may be substituted for the formal training.


Preferred Skills

Ability to: read diagrams, blueprints and schematics, improvise, substitute and alter parts to fit and mesh in systems when guide is not provided, make tune-up adjustments, and use mechanic hand tools and small power tools.
